How do I get a job while in college so I can make money on the side?

Preferably a job on-campus. I'm going to LSU. I don't know if I'm going to live in dorms or have my own place but either way I want to make money for myself. I want to get into the workforce early so I can know what it's like.

Ava,

With the high cost of college it is understandable that you want to earn some pocket money. Here are a few suggestions for where to look for employment on a college campus.

1. Colleges are big businesses, so they ALWAYS have jobs available. So your first option is to go right to LSU's website and look at the careers tab. You might find something there that fits you interest and needs.

2. Do you have any hobbies or skills that you might want to explore as career, if so then try to find a job that will align with those interest. I was a business major and took a job in the student center. I started as a cashier and eventually became the site manager. It was great experience teaching me how to manage people, handle money, make deposits and leadership skills. As an added bonus, during my last year of school I was employed by the university so my tuition was cut in half!

3. The community around your school relies heavily on the student population, so don't exclude those businesses as options for employment. Its a great way to meet people in the community that will be your home for 4 years.

4. College campuses and sports go hand in hand. You can look at working in one of the venues that host events that way your work will not conflict with you studies, as these do not happen every day!

You have options and ideally you want to jump on it before all the other students get to campus and begin trying to do the same thing. So check things out now and start applying BEFORE you actually get on campus. Most importantly, you are going to school for the degree so DO NOT get sidetracked and lose you focus. Having pocket money is good BUT the degree with increase your earning potential for the rest of your life.

Good Luck!

Ava, when I was in college I kept an eye on the bulletin boards in the buildings where I had classes. For instance, I was always in the music building, and I found a job in the record library. While working in the record library, a pastor from a nearby town came in looking for a choir director. I told him I was interested and after conversation and visits to the church, I was hired. When I was home for the summer, I found jobs around where I lived. Some of my college students that I see now for stress management have found jobs like baby sitting, pet sitting, house sitting. You can be proactive with these type jobs by passing out fliers and again watching the bulletin boards. My sister worked as a dorm proctor where you help the residents and live in the dorm. When I was in grad school, a friend and I cleaned houses and apartments. We had a blast doing that. Good luck to you and may your journey take you to happy trails.

Hi good morning! In my personal opinion get a job that don't let it take away from what you're studying, like a part time or so, and if it has to do with what you study even better.

If you're drawn to the world of business, why not explore part-time opportunities in a local company's accounting department or at a campus bank? The workload often varies, which could give you extra time to hit the books. Just make sure to discuss your study needs with your boss from the start. This way, you can balance work and study effectively while gaining valuable experience.

Hi! It's nice to meet a fellow Tiger! Have you tried using Handshake? It lists various jobs on and off campus. It also lists general job opportunities, internships, and is a way you can connect with employers. You use the same log in for MyLSU to log into Handshake. Also at times the LSU Athletic department may need help or you could even work concessions for some games.

Aside from this, you could also create a LinkedIn and explore more options there. You could research remote jobs and possibly get a remote job. I hope this helps! Good Luck!

Hey Ava!

If you're looking for jobs on campus, try the library. Or maybe you can be a tour guide, tutor, work at your campus Starbucks if you have one. You can work in the campus offices. Some offices on campus need secretaries or people to work at the front desk. Ask your college what kind of jobs you can apply for there. And check your college's website. Make sure you have your resume ready in case someone offers to interview you. Good luck! Hope you can find something.
