Paul’s Answer

When it comes to success a good philosophy is the best place to begin. I think former UCLA coach John Wooden had an excellent one which said:

"Success is peace of mind, which is a result of self satisfaction, in knowing that you did the best, to become the best, that you are capable."

That means making the effort to achieve positive results in life.

If you want to play college sports, you will need to work on your skills. If you want to research or inquire about college scholarships, you will need to create a sports resume and cover letter, and send it to the coaches, so they will know who you are and where you can be reached for contact and replies. So, developing the success philosophy and growth mindset is key to success, in my opinion.

Neil’s Answer

Find your life's purpose, meaning, "what would I love to do even if I had to suffer for it?" Some people never figure this out in their lives or spend most of their lives determining this but some of us do & it's the greatest advantage in life because one can spend all his life doing the work to determine this or spend their lives actually doing it.

Once you nail this, embark on this journey & create your goal KNOWING that the goals will change frequently especially if you are diligent in pursuing this stuff.

Think of it this way:
1. Purpose
2. Goals to serve that purpose
3. Daily tasks to meet those goals

If you can't nail either of these down confidently, then just get out there & do what you like to do with these 2 objectives in mind. You'll figure this out as you go but taking action will certainly work more effectively than sitting around & hoping something good happens to you. Good luck.

Wilder,

A few thoughts that may help you along the way:

- Always be open to learning new things
- Learn from others and their experiences
- Conversation with people from all walks of life is invaluable
- Set backs or roadblocks are only temporary, and they are always things that you can learn and grow from
- Always be yourself

Hi Wilder!

It's important to figure out what you're hoping to accomplish for a goal first. Are you driven by a career in a certain field? Try a generalist position first, entry level and then move up from there. Look for internships as a foot in the door at your ideal company.

Hiram’s Answer

Hey Wilder!!
How to be successful in life can be answered in a multitude of ways because we all measure success in different ways. I think it is best to remember that the energy we put out into the world is what we manifest. I'm sure the following answers will be cliche but it is because they are true.
1. Treat people how you want to be treated
2. Find what skill it is that you do better than others and maximize that.
3. Work hard now, play harder later
4. Remember that "No" just means Next Opportunity
5. Be the hardest worker in the room
6. Turn mistakes into learning experiences so they are not repeated.
7. Believe in SELF! We can do anything we put our minds to.
8. Stay positive! Our mind is often our biggest adversary.

You will do great things in the world, Wilder!

Hi Wilder,

There is no one recipe to "succed in life". At your age you still have to figure out who you are and your interests might change. There are many opportunities ahead of you, and you may change what you want to do in life while you attend university. Or you may have different jobs during your lifetime. That's all ok.

What is considered a "successful life" is also different for different people. For some, earning a lot of money is success. For someone else making a difference and leaving the planet a bit better is success. For others, caring for family is most important.

In your tags, I see that you are most interested in sports. Are you planning to play sports in college for a scholarship? Are you hoping to go pro after college? You realize that only a relatively small number of people make it as a professional athlete. You might also sustain a career-ending injury. So, you need a plan B if sports doesn't work out, but also for your time after sports.

You can study anything you are interested in, but given your interest in sports, exercise science with the goal of becoming a coach, or journalism with the goal of becoming a sports reporter or sports management or physiotherapy with the goal of working with a sports team might be interesting careers.

Good luck!
