Does technology support human communication?why or why not.

Thank you comment icon Tasha has a great answer for you! I would add one more comment: After almost 80 years of observing people worldwide, I think we are at a tipping point in evolving as a species. I believe technology and our communication ability has surpassed our wisdom to use it. Hopefully your generation can improve our situation. I wish you the best! Robert Epstein
Thank you comment icon Tasha did a great job answering this. Tech is just a tool - like a hammer, gun or whatever. Anything can be used for good or evil. Unfortunately, tech is being used for so much evil (hate groups, Russia dis-information) but there are plenty of examples where it has been used for good. Mark Malamut

Tasha’s Answer

Hi, Tomide. This is such a great question. My view is that technology is a tool, and like most tools, technology can be used to help or harm human communication.

On the "helping" side, here are a few areas from my own life where technology supports human communication:
* Cell phones can allow tweens to contact their parents when they are walking to and from school
* Translation technology allows us to communicate with people who speak a different language than we do
* Video calls can allow people to keep in touch (and see) friends and family who don't live nearby

On the "harming" side, here are a few examples of how I see technology harming human communication:
* People spend time on technology (phone, tablets) instead of engaging with the live people around them
* People can have a lot of "friends" on social media sites but lack real friendships in their lives
* Even when people are communicating with another person, they can be distracted by their cell phone

I am sure you can add to these examples, and it demonstrates that HOW we use technology will determine if it supports human communication. I look forward to seeing other responses to your question.

Interesting question!!!

Yes, technology can support human communication in various ways. Here are some reasons why:

Instant Communication: Technology provides instant communication tools such as emails, messaging apps, and social media platforms. This allows people to connect and communicate in real-time, irrespective of geographical distances.

Global Connectivity: The internet and digital communication tools enable people to connect globally. Individuals can communicate with others around the world, fostering international collaboration and understanding.

Efficiency and Convenience: Technology makes communication more efficient and convenient. With tools like video calls and conference platforms, people can have face-to-face conversations without physically being in the same location.

Information Sharing: Technology facilitates the rapid sharing of information. News, updates, and important announcements can be disseminated quickly through various digital channels, ensuring that information reaches a wide audience.

Social Networking: Social media platforms allow individuals to maintain and strengthen personal and professional relationships. They provide a space for sharing experiences, ideas, and emotions, contributing to a sense of connectedness.

Accessibility: Technology helps bridge communication gaps for individuals with disabilities. Various assistive technologies enable people with hearing, visual, or motor impairments to communicate effectively.

However, it's essential to recognize that technology can also present challenges to communication, such as the potential for miscommunication, the depersonalization of interactions, and issues related to privacy and security. Additionally, not everyone has equal access to technology, which can create digital divides and limit communication opportunities for certain individuals or communities. Therefore, while technology supports and enhances human communication in many ways, it's important to consider both its positive and negative impacts on interpersonal interactions.

Nieves’s Answer

Hello Tomide,

You've posed an excellent question. It's crucial to remember that technology is essentially a tool. Just like writing, print, and radio, that have transformed and expanded our communication methods throughout history. Technology serves as a medium, altering the way we engage with one another. For many individuals, particularly those with unique communication styles due to their neurological makeup, cultural background, language, or personality, technology can be incredibly beneficial.

We're on the brink of a significant shift in communication preferences, and this change isn't necessarily negative or positive. The primary distinction lies in the rapid pace of technological advancement, which can feel overwhelming. That's why it's vital for us to comprehend technology, its applications, and its constraints, and continue to adapt accordingly. Furthermore, we must recognize and be aware of the potential risks, such as misinformation and permanence, and learn how to safely navigate the digital landscape in the future.
