how is the market for surface designers?
I'm interested in the surface design area but I'm not sure if there are enough opportunities in this area.

Your career interest is so wonderful, creative and it is smart to be exploring this for your future. If you have a strong drive for design and hold a strong passion for it, I would advise that you discover all you can about this. There are opportunities to freelance and use websites on which you can be part of a directory. Upwork is one of those websites. It seems as though since surface design encompasses so much, it would be hard to track down how the demand is because you would never know how many projects you'd be working on, how many clients you would have.
As for being hired at a company, I have left some employment notices at the links below so you can get an idea of what the demand is in Brazil for surface designers. I would also advise a good way to get an idea would be to visit any nearby college and ask the professor or students for an idea of what is the future of surface design in your area.
I think it may be a good type of design because you can design many types of things - wallpaper, textiles, patterns, hand lettering, stationary, websites, phone cases and so many other possibilities. A fun way to begin with fashion would be to use the POAM website (link is below) on which you can take any of your designs, transfer it to a garment and sell it or just order one for yourself. Also look at the websites Picture This Clothing, Scrappy Apparel, Printful, and Printify. A lot of opportunity can be found online. For in person, visit a college and see about more information. The Federal University of Santa Maria would probably be helpful because they offer a program for Design. Find out from the college if there are any artist or graphic design organizations that you can join because I did not see any in your area. It would be important to network with other designers to expand your opportunities for projects.
As with any of the creative arts, you will need to make your own opportunities - such as in freelancing - as well as keep an eye out for companies that are hiring. Build a portfolio of all your work and consider having a website of your designs to show to possible customers and employers. Do not give up because nothing is guaranteed and if you love design, go forward with your plans. You will do well if you keep learning, are versatile and maintain that creative passion and drive. Don't give up ! Your talent is more important then predicting your future career results. You can do it !

Are you mostly interested in creating fabrics with different prints and textures? If this is the case, I’d strongly recommend you look into CLO 3D software. It’s really affordable at $50/month for an individual user. There are step by step tutorials on YouTube, and the possibilities are endless within the interface. The software is widely used in the industry for some very practical applications, and you could get a head start by learning some of the functions that apply to your interest. Obviously, the entire software is vast and offers a multitude of functions, of which you only need to learn a few basics to start experimenting with textures and prints, and other fabric properties. It’s all digital, on your laptop, no materials are wasted, and the visuals are quite amazing.
If your interests span wider, into jewelry and stone work, or even the woodworking, there’s plenty of opportunities for the surface designers there, too. It’s beyond my area of expertise, though, so I’d let others offer their opinions.
