Great question! Once you have decided which industry you may be interested in, start researching people in your area who are in that industry either on LinkedIn or on the web. Find connections with them and reach out - ask them to grab a coffee, set up a phone call and make a connection. Yu may have 10 rejections but 1 yes and that's all it takes! Don't be scared of the rejections or take them personally but if one person has the time to suit down and talk about their experience, I would consider this a win.
It's really important to talk to people in the field, not only could these people be your future colleagues, but they can tell you what the role and industry is REALLY like - the good and bad. Start networking early and often and don't be scared of getting a no - the best thing you can do is ask!
