Fear can be so crippling with a very broad spectrum of answers. Speaking from experience though, shyness and/or intimidation can be just the start. Some people take that as being stuck up or not interested and can lead to a misunderstanding. But to help overcome fear in general or attempt to improve, you need to tackle it in baby steps. First, what is it that you are afraid of? Whether it’s speaking, appearance, trying something new, swimming, the dark, etc., ask yourself why and then ask yourself how big or little the issue is that you fear. Sometimes we have a habit of making a mountain out of an aunt hill. It’s only human to worry, but don’t let it consume you. We end up losing time and sometimes sleep from stresses and fear. I would start by writing down what it is you’re afraid of, then think of ways to over come that fear. Talk to a friend, take time to yourself and do some yoga or breathing exercises, go through some old photos of good memories that brought out joy, journal your thoughts, write down things you have done that you are proud of, find and practice a hobby that brings out your creative side. These are all just little things to help break the ice and feel more relaxed. When you see all the positive things you can do, it helps give you confidence and a sense of both accomplishment and purpose that will help put fear where it belongs… on the back burner with more time to enjoy the little things in life. If it’s something big you fear like driving or failing a test, don’t avoid it all together. Give yourself time and study with a friend. Talking is crucial if fear is keeping you from living a normal life. If so, see a therapist or councilor to help guide you with more professional knowledge and advice. Try to remember that holding fear in or always being on alert/scared has a negative impact and keeps us from moving forward. It’s more like rocking back and forth in a chair and never getting over the fear.
