In layperson terms, what do you actually do at work?
My background is in sports program management. Essentially, I was the CEO, CFO, and COO of a university intramural sports program. I was responsible for all aspects of leading an organization that included 4,000 participants and 100 staff. For example, I facilitated registration and scheduling for approximately 25 leagues and events and 800 teams throughout the year. I maintained the program website and marketing to make sure that potential participants were aware of all that was offered. I published sports rules, policies, and procedures to optimize organization, safety, and accountability. I recruited, hired, and trained 100 staff who served as sports officials and helped supervise nightly events. Finally, I conducted evaluations of participants and staff to ensure a smoothly operated program that satisfied participants and staff. I analyzed evaluations to identify and implement future improvements. To accomplish all of the above, I had to adhere to an annual budget of approximately $100,000.
When you were a student, did you do anything outside of school to build skills or get knowledge that has helped your career?
Working on campus allowed to build my skills that helped me achieve my career after college. This especially helped working in sports. I was a sports official, which not only allowed me to stay involved in sports, but to also build intangible skills that are also beneficial in a professional career and in life like leadership, decision-making, conflict management and resolution, teamwork, communication, learning the value of sportsmanship and adversity, and working with diverse populations.
What is the one piece of career advice you wish someone gave you when you were younger?
Find a major that positions you for long-term success where skills are transferable; minor in Spanish. Sacrifice short-term interests for something that you are good at that will help you succeed long-term.
How did you pick your career? Did you know all along?
I was always involved/interested in sports. I found my career through on-campus student employment/internship with the university campus recreation program and found a mentor in my supervisor who helped me navigate the path into a career. It was in this experience that I realized I could develop an hourly, on-campus employment experience into a full-time career.
