What’s something you did early in your career—whether in nursing or business—that paid off years later Any tips on managing time, finances, and responsibilities between the two? #Spring25?

I’m currently in nursing school with plans to work in the NICU and eventually open my own MedSpa. I’d love advice from anyone who has balanced both healthcare and entrepreneurship.

I worked in the business side of healthcare, but I decided to go back to school to become an RN and then an APRN. It was hard to afford, but I’m glad I made those sacrifices.

Hello Monique!

This is a wonderful and insightful question. My work informs the business side of healthcare. There's general personal management advice that would be helpful: start and fill up an emergency fund, lower debts that are within your scope (i.e limit credit card debt vs. school debt, which is a longer term investment), and then invest whatever you can on a frequent basis (even if it's $10 a week) to allow those funds to grow over time. This is a foundation to build regardless of your next steps. For someone interested in owning a health company, start to identify current owners of medspas and see if you can speak with them to understand any hurdles they navigated, keys to success, business models, etc. Then try to grow your network of people who are familiar with the healthcare space and own health companies (these people can end up being future collaborators or advisors), or are interested in health (these people could be future clients). I'd also say to start educating yourself on the financing options that are available to entrepreneurs and the strengths and pitfalls of each.
