What skills have been most beneficial to have in the law field and how can I acquire those skills while I am young to develop them over my time in high school. What jobs/ internships should I take to be better at my future job in the law field? Are there any specific skills/ jobs you wish you had completed before college?

I am a in 9th grade and am looking for after school and summer jobs and would like to get jobs that would aid my future career.

Hi Giada!

Some skills I have found helpful throughout my schooling and early in my career are (1) reading comprehension and the ability to read quickly, (2) a good memory, (3) good writing and editing skills, and (4) great interpersonal (people) skills! When I was in high school, I developed these skills through pursuing my hobbies (reading, volunteering, spending time with friends and loved ones, participating in writing competitions, etc.). Generally, you should be a sponge! Learn everything you can!!

As for jobs that I'd recommend: customer service jobs are great experience! They will force you to develop people skills and a real appreciation for the support staff you will work with. If you're looking for legal experience, ask local firms if you can come shadow/intern/etc..

However, now that I am an attorney, sometimes I wish I had pursued other interests/experiences. The legal field is very insular and, of course you are young and as you learn more, your interest in the law might change. So I think you should keep an open mind--if there is something that interests you that you believe will be challenging, rewarding and meaningful you should without a doubt do it! Don't let an opportunity pass you by just because it doesn't feel law related. There's so many paths to law school and becoming an attorney so you have a lot of flexibility in what you pursue right now!

Wishing you all the best!!

Hi Giada,

To succeed in law, you need to work hard. This means focusing on both your studies and jobs. Law school will prepare you for this. Manage your time well to handle urgent tasks first. It might be tough at first, but it’s worth it. A law degree offers many career paths, like law enforcement, legal administration, politics, and education. Choose jobs or internships that help you succeed and lead in this field. Consider government internships and positions at both small and large law firms. Be the one who leads the way!
Thank you comment icon Thank you so much! This was really helpful! I will look for government internships and work on my leadership skills! Giada
