How can I use my sports business major and incorporate my love of basketball and photography as a career? #spring25

I am a high school senior interested in sports business. During high school I have played basketball all 4 years and plan on playing in college. I also developed a passion for photography. I would love to combine these two special areas of interest in a future career. I would like to know what areas of sports business would involve both these and how to develop my educational plan such as major and minor to achieve this career.

Thank you comment icon Apply to Umass Amherst. They have an elite sports management program, and worst case you get an amazing business school degree out of it. They have alumni who have worked as GM's in the MLB and NHL. They also have alumni who currently play professional sports. Additionally, they have great connections with the Celtics. I had several friends who worked for the celtics out of college as a result of the program. It is also a very fun school. Daniel Brennan

Hi, Noah!

Thanks for asking this question. In trying to figure out a direction, your basketball background, to me, is exactly that - background.

Presumably, you watch basketball (and other sports), so you probably have a pretty good idea of what they look like, which could help you…. as a graphic artist?! It’s not necessary, but helpful, to know what sports look/feel like in creating appropriate graphics.

Watch ESPN, where I work, for example, and check out the different animations we use in our teases and feature stories. Some of them are quick-draw type - where it looks like a pen is drawing on the screen in fast-speed. Other animations are used for fancy graphics on Monday a Night Football, cartoon “alt-casts” for NHL games, and many more applications.

That sort of thing has practically limitless potential. What do you think? Best of luck as you consider all the avenues to channel your knowledge and enthusiasm.

Best regards,

Hey Noah! You're already on a great path by knowing your passions and wanting to combine them early. In sports business, careers like sports marketing, media relations, or content creation for athletic brands or teams can blend your love of basketball and photography. You could major in sports business and consider a minor in digital media, communications, or photography to build both sides of your skillset. Start building a portfolio now. Photograph your team’s games, create highlight reels, or manage a sports social media page to gain experience. With your dedication and creativity, you can turn your love for the game and storytelling into an exciting, fulfilling career. Good luck!
