Should I double major in finance and computer science or major in finance and minor in cs to enter the fintech field?

While I don’t mind to double major, I’m just wondering if it’s necessary to put in the extra work to enter this competitive field.

Hey Emily,

Your major or minor doesn't limit what you can achieve after graduation. If you have skills and can show them, a good employer will appreciate that, along with your extra knowledge in another area. For example, if you studied Finance but also learned coding on your own, a Fintech company might see your Finance background as an advantage over someone who only studied Computer Science, as long as your coding skills are strong too. A minor in CS can definitely give you a solid foundation, and you can keep building on that knowledge beyond your classes. Keep pushing forward—your unique combination of skills can open many doors!

I suggest choosing finance as your major and computer science as your minor. In today's world, it seems like tasks in computing and programming can be more easily automated by AI. As a project manager with an MBA in the IT industry, that's the impression I get.

Mourad’s Answer

Combining finance and computer science is a smart choice. It makes you stand out from other candidates in the finance field. Even a basic understanding of tech can help you work in fintech. In a fintech company, you can choose between a career as a business analyst or in technology. However, don't limit yourself to fintech companies. Skills in finance and computer science are needed in almost all businesses.
