What specific business major would be the most relevant in today's market?
I will be a Freshman in the Fall of 2025 and have been accepted into the Honors Program at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. In high school, I was accepted into the Academy of Finance Program and learned about many different aspects of running a business. I did a 120-hour internship with a small business owner and enjoyed learning first hand about the many different aspects of running a business. I want to focus my major and graduate studies on the most marketable aspect of a business degree.

I have an MBA and I have to say it comes down to what specific area interests and excites you the most. There's a lot of good areas. I lean toward MIS/Computing (I became a Software Engineer). But Accounting, Marketing, Project Management, Org Strategy, Finance and others all have their place and good jobs may be had in any of them. Get comfortable with AI - it will be next to you no matter what you choose. Practical things to do include building or volunteering for interesting projects, presenting research/attending at a conference, joining a professional group, and doing a nice internship somewhere - these will all help you form a solid resume (along with your schooling) and provide things to talk about in future interviews. Good luck!

The most important qualifications that you can bring to the table, once you are in a company is to understand what decisions will do, both short term and long term. Sometimes a decision will help short-term but can be disastrous long-term. Your ability to ask or raise valid doubts will be very valuable. Being able to say no, in a way that still gets you a Thank You is a very good quality. You must also work with different disciplines effectively. When management has a problem and they say: "Let's ask Samantha what she thinks" - you have made it. Strive for that quality.
Good luck Samantha.

I'm always going to advocate for either international business which is a major part of running businesses in our globalizing world. Also Management information systems (MIS) which is where business meets technology. I think MIS is good because technology will only become more and more engrained in the way businesses function so being at the cross roads sets you up for success. I also enjoy the technology aspect.

In today's international environment there are lots of opportunities and with today's rapid change of technology I would also recommend to gain the basic knowledge of AI. AI is there to support and help you in your daily and future 'work'. Work experience and gaining different skills are the key elements to look for. Also I would like to advice you to look for something that interests you, not because it has a more secure job future, but is really appealing to you and try to gain skills that are required for that specific area of interest. Success !

Geopolitics, international relations, and/or global trade is an increasingly important topic for even small businesses who manufacture their products overseas. You don't need to be an expert coming out of college (you'll get a lot of "on the job training") but having a strong understanding of these concepts will help set you apart. Good luck!
