Where can I find real scholarships?

An out-of-state student looking for extra aid. I do not fit in the "need"-based, yet out of state if way more than what I do have. I have a great GPA and would like help on finding niche and academic based scholarships.

Thank you comment icon For detailed referrals, mention the niche you are looking for. Keep in mind that many scholarships are not just GPA based. Michelle M.

More than likely your high school will send out alerts about scholarships they become aware of. Other organizations such as National Society of High School Scholars or College Aid Pro also have suggestions. Then consider any organizations you or your parents belong to. Some examples from our journey are the medical staff where I work, national breed club for our dogs, collector car club we belong to, society of Mayflower descents, daughters of the American revolution. Local civic organizations are also possibilities such as the Lions club. Basically anything you or your parents have an interest in and participate in, may be a possible source of a scholarship opportunity. Good luck!

Google anything like being tall, your hair color, or eye color. There are all kinds of random scholarships out there. Just google random things and see what you can find to apply for. I applied for a scholarship for being tall I found by googling when I was going to school.

Hello, Chaneria !

I can give you some general advice, but there's still some details you didn't mention, like are you already enrolled at the out of state college, or will you be starting in the Fall ?

Based on what you've mentioned, you would be possibly eligible for Merit Based Scholarships and Grants. These are awarded to students that have gained academic, artistic, or athletic achievement. So it's not only GPA based either. I'll assume that you fit into this category and suggest some places to seek Merit Based Scholarships.

First, visit your college and find out about the Merit Based Scholarships that the actual college offers. If you've just graduated High School and are not in the other state yet, visit your high school's guidance office and ask for a list or websites of Merit Based Scholarships and Grants.

You may have read the scholarships on these websites, but go to them again and do a search for merit based scholarships as these websites do have some - Bold, Scholarships, Fastweb, and College Board Scholarship Search.

Another thing you can do is search for scholarships and grants for your Major Subject. You can probably go to individual company websites that are connected to your Major to read if they offer student scholarships and what the requirements are or e-mail them to ask. Yes, it is quite a bit of searching and reading, but you need to know first hand what each scholarship and grant requires so that you know which ones to apply for. Check with your home state's Chamber of Commerce or Town Hall to see if some are given for your state's residents if they study out of state.

If you are of a certain nationality, race or heritage, you can also obtain merit based scholarships. These are granted to students based on academic achievement, leadership potential, or specific cultural or demographic criteria and not financial need. Do a search online, if you fit this category, for "college scholarships for minorities" and read about the scholarships.

So, in order to assist you with specific scholarships and grants, you really need to provide more details, but the information I have provided in general can probably help you out for a start. I wish you all the best !

Hi Chaneria,

First, check with your target university what kind of package they can offer you and if there are any additional merit-based scholarships they might have. This usually requires that you have applied for FAFSA.

Check if there is a reciprocity agreement for tuition between your state and your target state:

https://ohe.mn.gov/paying-college/other-ways-pay/tuition-reciprocity.

Check the residency requirements in your target state: how long do you need to be a resident of that state to qualify for in-state tuition? It's usually one year, maybe two.

Check if your home state and home town offer any scholarships:

https://www.myhighered.mn.gov/paying-college/scholarships

https://www.afscmemn.org/local-2839-brooklyn-park-firefighters/scholarships

https://www.mnchamber.com/your-opportunity/minnesota-chamber-commerce-environmental-sustainability-foundation-scholarship

https://www.scholarships.com/financial-aid/college-scholarships/scholarships-by-state/minnesota-scholarships

Check for scholarships specifically for out-of-state students in your target state:

https://scholarships360.org/scholarships/how-to-get-scholarships-for-out-of-state-students

Check if an employer of a parent or guardian has a scholarship program for children of employees.

You did not indicate your intended major or university, but check with professional societies in your field and with large companies and foundations that would employ people with that kind of degree. So, if you are in computer science, hit up the Googles and Metas and Microsofts etc.

Look up scholarships for people with specific backgrounds by race, ethnicity, gender, disability, or any other characteristics.

Use the scholarship boards that allow you to filter for specifics. I left some links for you below.

I hope this helps for now! All the best to you!
