What type of club should I open in my high school?

Hey everyone! I'm a rising junior and I have a strong interest in artificial intelligence. While I don't have much prior experience, I'll be doing a research internship in data science this summer.

I've been thinking about starting two clubs next year. One for the International Research Olympiad and another for the Technology Student Association. But I'm still unsure if those will be the right fit or worth the effort.

I really want to start a club related to artificial intelligence, but I’m not exactly sure what kind of AI-focused club would make the most sense or be the most engaging for students. If you have any ideas or suggestions, I’d love to hear them!

That's a fantastic idea! Starting a club around your passion is one of the best things you can do in high school. Since you're learning about AI yourself, you could start an "AI Explorers Club." The focus wouldn't be on being experts, but on learning and discovering the world of AI together. You could start with fun, hands-on activities that don't require a lot of coding experience, like using online tools to train a simple machine learning model to recognize pictures of cats and dogs, or exploring AI-powered music and art generators. This makes the club super welcoming for everyone, no matter their experience level.

Another cool idea would be an "AI for Good" club. In this club, you could brainstorm how AI can be used to solve problems in your school or community. For example, you could work together on a project to design an app that helps students find volunteer opportunities or a tool that helps reduce food waste in the cafeteria. This type of club is really engaging because it shows how technology can make a real, positive difference. Either of these ideas would be a great way to build a community of curious students and would definitely be worth the effort!

Conduct a survey. Ask your peers what they want to learn. You can create the survey online, and can easily and quickly see the answers. Once you create the questions and distribute, you'll have the data to begin. From there, you can figure out where you should focus and create a program or club.

Hi Tanjim,
I love that you are taking the initiative to start a new club (or 2) and that you are looking to bring people together. I don't have experience bringing people together for a "club", but I have run a few innnovation workshops and led visioning and planning groups. I think some of the things we did there might apply here.

What if you started a Technology Student Association and one of the things you talked about/explored was AI. AI is a really broad topic. When the club members got together, you could do some brainstorming about what people wanted to focus on. As AI is "the thing" right now, a lot of people will probably bring this up. But, there might be other ideas that you had not yet considered. Doing a group activity where people get to share ideas allows for people with similar interests under the umbrella of "technology" to find each other. And, maybe you can even invite speakers to come in and talk about the topics people in the club want to explore. Maybe people's parents, neighbors, etc. would be willing to come in to share some real world experience.

Goodluck. Whatever you decide, you will be creating something that wasn't there before and that's a step forward.

That's awesome that you're a rising junior with a research internship in data science! Starting a club now is a great leadership move and can strengthen your profile for college, research, and future internships. Since you’re interested in AI and want it to be engaging, here are some club ideas and formats that could match your goals:

Top AI-Focused Club Ideas
1. AI & Data Science Club
A general yet powerful club where students:

Learn Python & AI basics (with beginner-friendly projects)

Explore machine learning, ChatGPT, image recognition, etc.

Do hands-on challenges like:

Predicting grades

Training a spam filter

Building an AI chatbot

Why it's great: Flexible, scalable, beginner-friendly
Bonus: You can invite mentors, researchers, or even leverage your summer internship connections

2. AI for Social Good
A club where students work on small projects using AI to solve real-world problems, such as:

Detecting fake news with NLP

Identifying environmental issues from satellite images

Sentiment analysis on mental health posts

Why it's great: Aligns with college admissions trends (tech + social impact)
Collaborate: With social studies or science departments

Given your interest in artificial intelligence and upcoming data science internship, a great idea would be to start an AI & Emerging Technologies Club at your high school—one that introduces students to the fundamentals of AI, machine learning, and real-world applications through hands-on projects, guest speakers, and collaborative challenges like Kaggle competitions or mini hackathons. This club could be more engaging than simply affiliating with a national organization, as it allows flexibility to explore current AI trends (like generative AI or ethics in AI) and tie them into school-wide initiatives or cross-curricular collaborations. You can still connect with groups like TSA or participate in research competitions through this club, making it both broad in appeal and deep in content.

Good luck in whatever you do. It sounds like you are a definite leader and we need more of those.

You already have what you need to succeed—your interest and passion for AI. You know how to build on that interest by starting a club or social group. The name of the club doesn't matter much; what counts is clearly defining what you want to achieve and reflecting that in the group's description. AI is a hot and growing field, and it's here to stay. It's constantly evolving, and people are still discovering how to use it. Once you gather some members, you can work together to refine your goals and gain the knowledge and experience you seek!

I was thinking maybe you could start a club where you not only do basic AI projects, but also have discussions around AI topics. Like, will it take over jobs? How can we make sure it stays a tool and not something that replaces people? That kind of stuff could be interesting even for students who aren’t into coding. You could also do simple workshops or watch videos together and talk about them. It’s not a super advanced idea, but it could be a fun and accessible way to get people engaged.

Hi Tanjim,

You have a great opportunity to start a data science club where you can explore different ideas about data and how it changes over time. You could also try out experiments with data using various software tools.

Wishing you the best of luck!

Take care

Absolutely go for it! AI is the upon us and now and I can tell you are excited about it. I agree with the answer above to center it on Exploring AI. There are so many apps and different ways to apply AI to solve problems. One area emerging right now is how AI is being used in negative ways. I would think about how you can help educate students about what some of the shortfalls could be in allowing AI into certain aspects of your world. Things like a viewing party together to just watch a few videos together to learn about what AI is all about to get the wheels turning with the group would be a good place to start. Best of luck!
