How can I become a dental hygienist in Texas?
I recently moved to the U.S. and I’m living in Houston, Texas. I’m interested in becoming a dental hygienist, but I’m not sure where to start. I’d like to know what steps I should take, such as which programs to apply to, what prerequisites are required, and if there are any licensing exams. I’d also appreciate advice about affordable schools or community colleges in Texas.

Hi Fatemeh,

To become a licensed Dental Hygienist in Texas, you need to graduate from a CODA-accredited program in dental hygiene. You then need to pass the exam of the American Dental Association and pass a clinical examination administered by a regional examination board.

I left some links to more detailed information for you below. Make sure to review the requirements for each school carefully and talk to the Admissions Offices as there might be mandatory informational sessions or admission tests or pre-requisites.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!

Graduate from an accredited college, like Houston Community College, with prerequisites: English, math, biology, and chemistry. Apply during or after the program for the National Board Hygiene Program, and the regional clinical program required for licensure, and pass the exam. The next step is to apply for the Texas hygienist license.

Hello Fatemeh!

Pursuing a career in dental hygiene is an exciting journey. Most programs will have you study subjects like Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology, English, Speech, Psychology, and Algebra. These courses help you build a strong foundation in science, which is key for your success.

To become a licensed dental hygienist, you need to graduate from an accredited program and pass both written and clinical exams. Each state has its own specific requirements, so it's good to check those as well. You'll need a high school diploma or GED to apply to these programs.

If you're already a licensed dental hygienist and want to further your education, many programs offer online courses for degree completion or even a master's degree. This flexibility can make it easier to balance your studies with other commitments.

Dental hygiene programs are designed to give you the skills you need to work with patients, use advanced technology, and educate others about oral health. Becoming a dental hygienist means you'll be making a positive impact on people's lives.

An Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene is a direct path to becoming licensed. It typically takes about 2 years if you study full-time, or around 3 years if you're part-time.
