Hi Madi!

It's fantastic that you're planning for a future in marine biology! Since you're already taking Japanese, consider choosing science or environmental studies for your second class in Semester 1. These subjects will give you a great start in learning about ecosystems and oceans. For Semester 3, geography is a better choice than history because it connects more with the environment and ocean systems. In Year 9, focus on doing well in science, math, and English, and keep your curiosity about ocean life alive. Try watching documentaries, reading books about the sea, or volunteering for beach cleanups. Building a strong science foundation now will really help you in high school and beyond!

Good Day Madi!

SEE https://www.mylearningonline.com.au/our-course/marine-studies/?

There are a lot of marine organisms that you shall be working to protect! Habitats too that need preserving.

At school in grade 9, follow Biology, Chemistry. Opt preferably for Geography and Mathematics.

This one below is senior high school prerequisite subjects for Marine Biology

Here are some marine biology courses in Australia:
University of Melbourne: Offers a major in Marine Biology, focusing on understanding marine ecosystems and addressing global issues like climate change.

James Cook University: Provides comprehensive marine biology courses that include theoretical and practical applications in various marine environments.

University of Western Australia: Features a marine biology program that emphasizes the unique biodiversity of Western Australia's marine environment.

Australian Online Courses: Offers a Certificate of Marine Biology, which can be completed online, allowing for flexible learning.

Hi Madi,

I am glad to see that you are still passionate about marine animals. Your subject choices will somewhat depend on the options you have at your high-school. I see Mackay State High-School, Mackay North State High-School and Pioneer State High-School as well as Mackay Christian High-School and Holy Spirit College Mackay.

In your goals you state Marine Biologist in the veterinary field. To become a Marine Biologist, you would get a degree in Marine Biology/Marine Science but to become a Marine Animal Veterinary you would go to Veterinary School and specialize in Aquatic Animal Health. So, those are different paths and different education requirements. Check with universities you might be interested in what the entry requirements are, i.e. if there are any pre-requisites. But, I would assume that subjects in year 9 are not yet critical for your career choice.

Math and science are covered in your compulsory subjects in the Australian Curriculum but it seems to be fairly general "science". For your electives, if you can choose any additional STEM subjects, especially biology and chemistry, take those. If you have any options in computer/programming or technology/engineering, those are good. Some schools offer earth or environmental science or marine science. If you want to go to veterinary school, anything medical would also be good. Japanese is very cool.

I hope this helps! Pick the things you enjoy and have fun learning new stuff. All the best to you!

Starting Year 9, it's a great idea to start thinking about your future career path, and marine biology is a fascinating field. You should focus on doing well in science and math. These subjects are like the building blocks for marine biology. Make sure you pay attention in your science classes, especially biology and chemistry, and get a good understanding of math.

Given that you'll be taking History/Geography in Semester 3, this is an excellent opportunity to choose a class that will directly support your interest in marine biology. A class that focuses on biology or even general science that talks about things like the environment or chemistry would be really helpful. Marine biology is all about how living things and chemicals work together in the ocean.

As for what to focus on throughout the entire year, remember that marine biology is more than just learning about sea animals. It's also about chemistry, physics, and math. So, try to do your best in all of those subjects. You can also learn more on your own by reading books, watching shows about the ocean, or even helping with a beach cleanup. The more you learn and get involved now, the better prepared you'll be later on. All the best.
