I’m currently working on earning my ASN at a community college by 2027. After completing it, I plan on transferring to a 4-year university. What would be the best pathway to follow if my long-term goal is to become an Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner and eventually open my own aesthetics clinic, specializing in services like Botox, filler injections and other beauty procedures. ?

I’ve just started college and I’m in my first semester. I’m thinking about getting my CNA to gain experience for my résumé when I apply for jobs and when I apply to a university.

You can be a CNA while in school. You can see what nursing is all about and get good perspective on what you will be doing. You will be more comfortable when you start working as a nurse.

Hello, Zoe !

You have some great plans, Zoe !

You do not need to do a CNA training in order to look good on a resume or to apply to a university. Right now it's best to dedicate full time focus to your nursing studies at college. Look into Work Study through your financial aid office on campus. Through Work Study, you can get an on campus job at the campus health services if it's that you want experience. Try not to overload yourself with work during a nursing program. Work Study will allow you to work around your class and lab schedule. Inquire about Work Study as soon as you can since this is the beginning of your first semester.

You will have an Associates Degree before you apply for your Bachelors Degree in Nursing, so there should be no issues with applying. If you want to ultimately be a Nurse Practitioner, you would go for 2 to 3 more years for a Master of Science in Nursing. Once you are a nurse or an NP, you can go for the individual procedures you want to do, any aesthetic procedures upon certification of each. I believe that they all certify separately, like one training for Botox, one training for fillers, etc., but you should ask your professor to verify that. Ask your professor if you will be expected, if going for NP or Bachelor level nurse, to work as a general nurse first.

As for university admission, the thing that really matters is having good grades and a high GPA. You can smoothly show experience through volunteer work or Work Study.

I hope this helps and that you can verify any information with your professors or Department Chairperson so that you will be guided in the right direction for your circumstances. Best wishes in all you do !
