What are some potential obstacles regarding a career in environmental engineering?

I'm hoping to go into engineering and conservation but I'd also like to know if there are any challenges in entering that career. In particular, I want to do either mechanical or civil engineering. I know there's a lot of potential for improvement in terms of environmentally-friendly infrastructure. Are there any potential drawbacks or lack of employment in that field?

I think it is probably an exciting time to be in civil engineering at this time. (I cannot comment on mechanical.) The AI explosion is requiring a huge amount of new construction and infrastructure for building buildings to house all of the new computing power as well as power plants to meet the new energy demands for that huge amount of computing. In addition to building out these new buildings, structures and infrastructure, there will also be a demand to complete these projects in a way that balances environmental impact with new capabilities. You may be able to combine the two in this way. Best of luck!

Right now, there's a big demand for Civil Engineers, making it a fantastic career choice. A quick online search can give you more information. In Civil Engineering, you can focus on areas like environmental work and sustainability, which offer many exciting opportunities. I've worked in the environmental field with my Civil Engineering degree for over 30 years, and I love it.

Civil and Mechanical Engineering are different, so check out the courses to see which interests you more. Civil Engineering deals with infrastructure, buildings, and the environment, while Mechanical Engineering focuses on equipment and processes. Both are excellent paths to consider. Best of luck!

While I am not an environmental engineer, I am working in environmental sustainability for a major company and can tell you that the world absolutely needs more people studying and working in this space! There are so many major projects happening that either need an environmental engineer to make them sustainable or are focused on serving the sustainability marketplace (ie green energy!). Wishing you the best of luck, I find sustainability an incredibly rewarding career!
