When searching for scholarships, what are some keywords or websites to look up and use to find niche scholarships or scholarships that have a low participation rate (for a higher chance of winning) ?
For reference, I am a high school senior looking for scholarships. I want to major in biology or pre-med, and I want to become an optometrist in the future. So far, I've only found one specific scholarship, which was the ACF scholarship. Usually, when I search, the scholarships have expired, or I'm not eligible.

To find scholarships with less competition, start by looking into state optometric associations, local clinics, hospitals, and community groups like Rotary clubs, Lions Clubs, Kiwanis Clubs, and Elks Clubs. These places often have scholarships that aren't widely advertised. Focus on scholarships that renew each year, and use specific keywords like “pre-med high school senior scholarship,” “optometry scholarship,” or “biology major scholarship” along with your state or region. Words like “local,” “community,” “foundation,” or “professional association” can help narrow your search. For more focused results, try keywords like “minority pre-med scholarship,” “women in healthcare scholarship,” or “rural healthcare scholarship.” Also, consider research-based scholarships like “biomedical research scholarship” or “STEM research grant” for opportunities linked to healthcare advancements.
Check out websites like Fastweb, Scholarships.com, Going Merry, Cappex, Chegg Scholarships, Niche, Unigo, and Scholarships360. These sites allow you to filter by major, location, and other preferences to find scholarships that suit you. Professional organizations like the American Optometric Association (AOA) or the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) have specialized scholarships for optometry students. By using these platforms and targeted keyword searches, you'll have a better chance of finding scholarships with less competition that match your career goals.
