I will be attending Texas Tech for Engineering in the Fall. I have taken advanced classes since Middle School, however I am still concerned about the advanced course load at Tech.

Starting your first year in engineering can feel challenging but manageable, and you shouldn’t be too concerned about the course load. You could take advanced courses like Calculus I, II, and III, Physics, Engineering Design, Introduction to Engineering, programming, and software like MATLAB, while gaining hands-on experience in labs and workshops. Attend classes consistently, participate actively during lectures, take thorough notes, and ask your professors whenever you don’t understand something. Study consistently, work with peers on practice problems, submit assignments on time, and avoid missing classes to stay on top of your studies and maintain a strong GPA. You can also strengthen your understanding by using online resources, YouTube channels, or educational platforms to review and practice difficult concepts.
Use this year to explore your interests, identify your passion, and consider which engineering field suits your strengths and potential. Reflect on your career goals and research the job market to guide your decisions. Get involved in extracurricular activities, clubs, and student associations to apply what you’re learning and build connections. Take care of yourself by sleeping well, exercising, and checking in on your mental health. Stay organized, plan ahead with your academic advisor, strengthen your foundational skills, and treat setbacks as learning opportunities. Take things at a steady pace, enjoy the process, and remember that consistency, smart habits, and balance will set you up to succeed and make the most of your first year.
