Does a psychology major require an independent study or capstone project Is it based on the university you attend? #Fall25?

I'm a senior in high school. I'm plan to pursue a degree in psychology. Wanted to ask questions regarding my major.

Thank you comment icon If you know the college you will attend, let us know because it does depend on the college you attend. Michelle M.

Hi Kensley,

Asking this question early on is really wise. It shows that you are considering not only psychology as a major, but also the academic requirements associated with it; this kind of thinking will help you succeed in college.

Depending on the university and the particular degree track, a psychology major may need to do an independent study, senior thesis, practicum, or capstone project. Some universities include a formal capstone program where students conduct research under a faculty mentor, write an important article, or present their findings. In lieu of a typical capstone, some provide applied internships, honors thesis opportunities, or optional research labs. Additionally, some programs, particularly those at smaller departments or community colleges, may not even require a capstone, choosing to concentrate on electives and core coursework.

The big picture is that because psychology is such a flexible science, programs create their requirements according to their strengths. Universities that prioritize research usually place a strong emphasis on empirical projects, whereas programs that are practical or clinical in nature may encourage internships or fieldwork collaborations. It is therefore important to review the degree programs offered by each institution.

The positive news? This is not something to worry about right now. Advisors, faculty mentors, and even your higher-level peers will assist you in
determining the best course of action once you are enrolled in your program, whether it includes experiential learning, a capstone project, or practical research. The most important thing is to pick a school that allows you to develop into the person you want to be.

Kensley, you're asking the perfect questions for your current situation. Keep up the good work; it will give you a significant strategic advantage in Fall '25.

Best wishes!

Hi Kensley. I’m impressed you’re looking into this in advance.

Regarding a requirement for independent study or capstone project, generally no, not required. But some schools might require something like this and maybe call it something else. For most universities, you can check the course requirements for a major on the department section of the college website.

Most likely, you will be required to take a statistics course, probably a research methods course, and then a research course that is led or at least supervised by a professor. Most university psychology departments will let you propose an independent study project instead of a research course, but you will need to prepare a solid case for your idea and find a professor to sponsor your project.

Visit the Psychology Department website for any college or universities you are considering, that should give you a good idea about a major in psychology.

I hope this helps.

Great question, and yes—it largely depends on the university and the structure of the psychology program.

In many undergraduate psychology programs:
-A capstone project, senior seminar, or independent study is required in the final year.
-Other programs make these options elective rather than mandatory, especially at larger universities.

Here’s what commonly varies by school:
-Research-focused programs often require a capstone, thesis, or independent research project.
-Applied or general psychology programs may offer a senior seminar, practicum, or portfolio instead.
-Some universities allow students to choose between:
-A research thesis
-An independent study with a faculty mentor
-A capstone course that integrates theory and practice

If you’re interested in clinical psychology, counseling, or graduate school, completing a capstone or independent study can be very beneficial, even if it’s optional. It helps you:
-Build research and writing skills
-Work closely with a professor (great for recommendation letters)
-Clarify your academic and career interests

My advice: once you’re accepted, review the program’s curriculum carefully and ask an academic advisor or department faculty member how seniors typically fulfill their final requirements.

You’re already asking the right questions early—that’s a strong start.
