What are the essential qualities needed to excel in the field of Surgical Nursing?

Hello! I am a current high school senior who enjoys details, precision, and has had the privilege of working with medically fragile children. Because of this, I have decided to go into the field of Nursing, potentially Surgical Nursing. However, as I have done more research, I am curious about what it might take to excel in this specific field. What are qualities or attributes that help people do well in this position?

It's wonderful that you're interested in this area of nursing. You'll need skills like empathy, good communication, and the ability to work well with children, and their family, especially considering their fear. Working with surgeons can be a bit different. You'll need to be precise, patient, and ready for quick changes. Sometimes, surgeons may not be the most understanding, and they might expect you to anticipate their needs. They can also blame nurses for problems, even if it's not your fault. Surgery is a very technical field, so be ready for that. Communicating with children and their families is often easier, and you may have to explain things the doctor doesn't. This field can be challenging but also very rewarding if you can handle multiple tasks at once.
