What are the best ways to manage stress while trying to get done with school work? I love the idea of biology but what if I get over-stimulated and need a break? Could I ask my teachers if I could take a break or not even try?

I am in middle school in 6th grade and I am dealing with stress. I just want to know because I know the stress will only keep building so I know how to get my school work done and handle stress at the same time. I also tackle football and love aggression but sometimes I love soft, quiet music to calm racing thoughts.

Michelle’s Answer

Hello again, Anna !

It is very important that if you are experiencing anxious feelings that someone in person sit with you to discuss the details about it. I just responded to your question about colleges for animal science so even though generalized advice about how to "relax" can be inspiring, my advice is to visit your Middle School's social worker or guidance counselor for someone to talk about this with in person.

If you read my advice about colleges to your other inquiry, you will see that I am advising that you Major in Animal Science in college, not Biology which would be focused on human biology, not animal biology since you want to work with animals. It's also my advice, as previously mentioned to take biology in any of the schools you attend till you graduate High School. You can do it. It just takes setting priorities and building the confidence towards your dream career.

Meeting with your middle school social worker will help you get in touch with your triggers and help you to start living in the moment. As I've mentioned in my previous advice, being around animals which you love may also be a good idea to reduce some of the stress. I advised starting to do some volunteer work and then when you're 14 join the program I mentioned. You're still young (11 years old) and should be having fun with sports, but pace yourself and live in the moment.

If you can remember that it would not be Biology in college for a career working with animals, rather Animal Science, maybe that will alleviate the anxious feelings because your college path will involve studying animals that you love. Try not to jump too far ahead with plans. It's good to be looking at colleges and Animal Science programs, but sometimes when we try to figure everything out in advance all at once, it naturally can be overwhelming.

So visit your social worker or guidance counselor at school and assess your schedule, involvements and pace. Eat high nutritious food and get enough sleep and exercise. Take care of your physical health as you learn how to handle challenges. This is just general advice but it would be best to discuss this with someone in person.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !

Thank you for your question. This is more related to your time management. Firstly, you need to find a time management tool to help, eg Google calendar, ms outlook, phone calendar, etc
Below are my suggestions:
1. Put down the time you need to attend classes
2. Plan the time to complete your assignment, projects, etc before deadline. Assign some time every day. Also, review the material covered in the class on the day.
3. Make sure you have enough time to sleep and do some exercise
4. You can allocate the time for your hobbies, friend & family gathering, etc.
5. Assign more time to do revision before assessment
Hope this helps! Good luck!
May Almighty God bless you!

Steward "Tony"’s Answer

Even though you like football, find and add another sport that can teach you discipline and relieve the buildup of stress i.e. Martial Arts (My Favorite), Handball/Racquetball/Pickleball/Volleyball (Hand Eye Coordination), Runners Clubs, etc.  Take a couple of hours a week and you'll soon be in a quiet place when the stres starts to rear its ugly head. Meditation, Qi Gong,  Tai Qi, Stretching/Gymnastics/ BodyBuilding.

As far as your teacher is concerned, they have a schedule to keep and deadlines to meet, so what you miss, you will miss. If you ask you'll get a yes or no. If you don't ask, You already gave yourself a "NO"

Get Used To It Now, Because The Real World Will Be Much More Difficult & Demanding. They Expect Results & Will Pay Only For Results.

Hi Anna,
Like you, I had stress big time in high school. But after doing some research, I put together a 3-part system that worked great for me:
1. MEDITATION. Look into adopting one of the Mindfulness and Mantra meditation techniques. Pick one that feels best to you. I remember that it almost seemed like magic at the time. After I meditated consistently for 20 minutes a day for a week or two, my problems started to become no big thing. I could take care of them.
2. EXERCISE. Participate actively in some form of energy-burning exercise or sport for a short time daily. But nothing that makes you anxious!
3. SELF TALK. Folks don’t realize how important the stuff they say in their mind all day affects everything they do. I used to think, “Sheesh, I CAN’T handle this school homework and my home chores, too!” But if I instead applied some time-management tricks, I thought, “I know I can do this, if I work a deal with my parents and break it into smaller parts for today and tomorrow.” Check out some books like, “What to Say When You Talk to Your Self” by Shad Helmstetter.

You need to apply these three solutions every day, but don’t over-do them.

These won’t make your problems go away (you’ll need to address each one as it comes up and you should ask for help from someone—a school counselor, a sympathetic knowledgeable adult, etc.). What these solutions will do, if you’re conscientious in doing them, is make you feel much more relaxed as you face your problems.

Also, biology is a fine field with a wide range of specialties. Although I’m an engineer, my preferred careers have been in biomedical engineering. I wish you all the best in your future.

Shalini’s Answer

You can beat stress in a very simple way without allocating separate time for it - how?
- Just breathe in from your left nostril while closing your right nostril with a finger. After a long deep breath in, close your left nostril , and breathe out through your right nostril. Repeat the same this time breathing in through your right and breathing out through your left nostril. Continue this whenever you are feeling low on energy or cant focus.
I would also advice to reduce screen time if you do have a phone or ipad or laptop. Come up with a list of things you can do when you feel like looking at your screen. Paste that list in your room. It will greatly help you. It could include anything like talking to your family member, caring for pets, gardening etc etc.
