Hi Ahnna,

I'm excited to share some great course options based on your question. If your school doesn't offer these, your local city college might be a good resource.

Here are the courses to consider:

Core Art Courses
These are essential for RISD:
- Drawing I & II: Strong observational skills are key.
- Life drawing, still-life studies, and perspective drawing.
- Painting: Focus on acrylic and oil, color theory, composition, and conceptual development.
- 2D Design/Foundations of Art: Important for RISD’s first-year curriculum.

Graphic Arts/Digital Path
- Digital Art & Design
- Graphic Design
- Digital Illustration
- Digital Photography
- Media Arts
- Animation or Motion Graphics

These courses develop skills for RISD’s Graphic Design, Illustration, and Film/Animation programs.

Advanced & Portfolio-Building Courses
- AP or Honors Art Classes: AP Studio Art: Drawing and AP Studio Art: 2D Design help create a strong portfolio.
- Architecture/Technical Design/Drafting: Architectural drawing, CAD, and industrial design basics show design thinking and spatial skills.
- Photography (Digital or Darkroom): Composition, lighting, and visual storytelling are valued by RISD.
- Sculpture/Ceramics/3D Art: Important for RISD’s 3D studio work.
- Art History: Helps in understanding art movements, vocabulary, and deepening portfolio concepts.
- Design/Engineering: RISD appreciates problem-solvers.

I hope this helps you. Keep working hard and stay focused on your growth and future.

Best,
Dave

Hi Ahnna,

I may not have attended RISD, but I grew up nearby and was accepted there. I chose a different school mainly for financial reasons.

Remember, all art schools will look at your portfolio to assess your work. If you get an interview, it's a good idea to bring physical examples of your art along with your online portfolio.

In high school, try to take as many art classes as you can. Art schools look for originality and skills in painting, drawing, and design. Your art teacher can help you put together a portfolio with your best pieces.

RISD is one of the top art schools, and getting in is competitive. You need to show what makes you unique to stand out.

I recently saw an exhibit at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, CT, showcasing amazing high school artwork. These students were doing incredible work, much more advanced than what I learned in high school.

This shows that many high schools will support and guide you if you are motivated. They'll help you build a strong portfolio and prepare you for the challenges of a school like RISD.

Find what interests you and include it in your art. Whether it's sports, your cultural background, unique materials, or specific styles, these things help show your growth as an artist.

Also, explore classes outside of school. If that's not possible, YouTube is a great free resource for learning. Libraries are helpful too. Online platforms like Udemy and Domestika offer affordable classes. Domestika especially offers international perspectives, which can be inspiring.

You have access to so much information today. Be adventurous and brave, and I'm sure you'll do great!
