Start by focusing on the subjects you enjoy in high school. Use this to explore degree programs at nearby colleges or universities that match your interests. Once you have a sense of the degree you want, think about which schools you might want to apply to.

When choosing schools, consider several factors. Think about what you and your family can afford, check out available scholarships, and visit campuses to see if you like them. Research school reputations to find the best programs for your interests, and see which schools accept you.

Another helpful strategy is to look at community colleges that have partnerships with your desired school. These colleges often allow you to transfer most or all of your credits, helping you save money on your bachelor's degree. Starting at a community college can make your education more affordable and still lead you to your dream school.

Hi James, junior year is a crucial time for college preparation, so your timing is excellent. Based on my experience attending schools in different countries, the main factors to consider are which environment will challenge you most and what financial support is available. Scholarships and merit fellowships were key in my decisions. To start, gather your family's financial documents for FAFSA, which I believe opens in October of your senior year by submitting early can help with aid. Look into state grants like Cal Grant if you're in California, and check out scholarships through sites like Fastweb, Scholarships.com, and your school's counseling office, especially local ones. When choosing colleges, focus on the strength of programs you're interested in, campus culture, location, internship and job placement rates, class sizes, and support services like tutoring and mentoring. If you're undecided about your major, many schools offer flexibility and strong general education programs. Try to visit campuses, attend virtual sessions, and connect with current students for real insights. For readiness, take the SAT or ACT this spring to allow time for a retake, maintain your GPA, and start thinking about your personal essay topics early. Stay in touch with your school counselor and feel free to contact admissions offices with questions. I hope this helps!

Hey there! Here are some tips that I did when I was apply to schools: start early and stay organized—track deadlines, requirements, and essays in one place. Stay focused on consistent grades, your extracurriculars, and building relationships with teachers for recommendations. Draft essays ahead of time and research schools to apply where you genuinely fit. Planning will really help you not have to cram ahead of key deadlines.
