One underrated skill in my opinion is writing/communication. Can you take complex ideas and simplify them so that a 3rd grader could understand them? Being able to analyze papers, data, articles, etc. and come with a clear perspective on what they actually mean and what they implications may be for your team/business is something that's critically important no matter what major or job you're in.

The most important skills in nursing are critical thinking, emotional control, communication, and prioritization, they help you make safe decisions under pressure and work effectively with a team. These matter more than memorization because patient situations change, but these skills keep patients safe in every setting.

Hi Alyssa,
Good question!
You will of course need a solid scientific background and understanding and master the fundamental techniques that you need to help patients as a nurse. Don't be afraid to admit if you are not sure about something and ask questions.
Beyond that, stress resistance and good judgement in stressful situations will be very important, also communication skills and empathy. You will also be in situations where you need to trust your own professional judgement and experience and possibly advocate for a patient even if it means going against a head nurse or a doctor. So, some backbone is also necessary.
I hope this helps! All the best to you!
