How helpful is a neurobiology degree if I want to be a neurosurgeon?

I've heard a couple of people say the degree doesn't really matter, but how will it affect, or will it affect my ability to become a surgeon?

There is no such thing as a neurobiology degree. The degree will be a Bachelors if from a 4-year college or university. You can be a neurobiology major. This will give you foundational knowledge more focused on neurobiology. You will not learn anything about being a surgeon with this major. It is true that your major doesn't matter, but having a 4-year degree does matter for getting into medical school. In medical school you will expand on your foundational knowledge and have the opportunity to do surgical rotations to learn more about specializing in that. The training and education after medical school will prepare you to be a neurosurgeon. You can take up hobbies that will help with your manual dexterity and you can shadow surgeons to learn more about the day-to-day. For an undergraduate degree the primary focus is to gain the foundational knowledge to do well on the MCAT. At liberal arts institutions, it will be easy to do this while majoring in any subject that you are interested in. Good Luck.
