What are the best practices or tips for studying and completing the course work for online classes on your own when you aren't physically going to class and it isn't live through Zoom?

I'm going back to school and new to the world of online classes.

As mentioned previously, where you choose to study/complete schoolwork is a major factor. Should you choose to opt for being comfortable (i.e. sitting on the sofa/couch, sitting in your bedroom), you may find it more difficult than a designated space optimized for working (i.e. home office, library).

The different environment can be daunting, however, it may also help to find some great internal motivators. Constantly ask yourself (or remind yourself) why you are going back to school, as well as what do you want to receive from completing school. As Cheryl mentioned above, self-motivation can go a long way in moving your studies along.

Also, don't forget to take care of yourself along the way. Take the necessary breaks from being "heads-down" on work, maintain positive social/personal outlets; even better if they are stimulating educationally (i.e. reading, brain-exercise games).

Check out what your institution offers in terms of support; chances are they want you to be successful and have resources to assist you. Tips for success include:
1. Invest time to get to know your platform, e.g., Blackboard, and leverage its functionality to stay fully informed about assignments and feedback.
2. Determine everything you will be evaluated on, e.g., participation in discussion threads, papers, comments, assignments, exams)
2. Block time on your calendar for all those events and deliverables and integrate this calendar with your personal and work schedule.
3. To stay motivated, clearly articulate your goals for completing this program of study and when you find yourself procrastinating, or losing faith in your self-discipline, remind yourself of those goals.
4. Take care of yourself and if you are falling behind, communicate with your instructors and the administration and ask for any help you may need.
5. Read the book Two Awesome Hours by Josh Davis which may help you to manage your mental energy and maximize it for your success.

Create a study schedule and follow it. Online classes can be tough because you have to set your own time for studying and doing assignments. It's also helpful to have a special study spot and keep it tidy. Avoid studying where you usually relax, like your bed or couch, because your body links those places with rest. Mixing them can make it harder to concentrate and mess with your natural routine.
