A shelter or farm to volunteer is great. Ask animal grooming places too. Walk and pet sit animals.

Volunteering at an animal shelter or clinic is an excellent first step. You want to ensure that this is an occupation you can handle as working with hurting animals can be difficult for some people to maintain. Also, having this on your resume and background for experience gives you an advantage over others who don't haven't invested their time and energy. Colleges will be looking for these kinds of things on your application.
