What type of hands-on project project experiences should I seek during my undergraduate studies to become a standout candidate for roles in the Agri-food technology sector?

I am currently a year two student of Biosystems Engineering who has undergone training on different modules associated with the engineering field such as welding and fabrication, farm power, engineering survey ,construction, during our recess term at school .Before completion of the course ,we are to carry out industrial training as well .We cover quite a number of things but i would love to focus more on the agricultural sector .In my free time i love to sing and also enjoy travelling as much

I agree with the comment on focusing on business problems you like to solve - of course, this can take time and experience to understand! The more experiences you can get - through class projects with real-world components, volunteering, internships - the more you can "test hypotheses" as to what motivates you. One question you can ask yourself is, "is this bringing me energy? or do I feel depleted?" - that can be a way of understanding where you want to focus. Specific to ag, the more you can get on farms and talking to folks on the ground and learning from them, the better! Seek our projects and programs connecting you to farmers and ranchers - you will learn a lot.

So I think a good approach is to focus on what business problems would I like to solve. When I interview kids coming out of school and ask them about their projects on their CVs, I usually here "i was tasked with building a database to manage XX information" and then they proceed to explain what was complex about the data schema, etc. What I want to hear is "So the problem we were trying to solve was YY and to do this we put together a team to build (something) that could deliver (something else)." When I ask them "what was the business impact" they say things like "well the project got a A" or "the database scaled really well." Try to focus on identifying complex business problems and helping to build an end-to-end solution that solves for the business problem, not just what role/tasks you played in the effort.

Build hands-on projects in smart farming, food processing, data analysis, and sustainability—basically make plants + tech become best friends 🌱💻. Experience with sensors, IoT, automation, and real-world problem solving will help you stand out in agri-food tech roles.
