What is a good way to get my foot in the door of the sports world, as a freshman going into a Sport Industry major in college?

I am planning to attend The Ohio State University for a Sport Industry major. I would love to work with teams or even players with their promotions and advertising. What is a good way to get my foot in the door of the sports world, as a soon-to-be freshman in college?

Coincidentally, my son majored in Sports Management, played league baseball, basketball and football. He made Dean’s List every quarter. You don’t have to make Dean’s List but you need good grades.

Choose a sports-related major. Participate in school and after-school
activities to show you’re well-rounded.
Join a fraternity (if interested) because they have a lot of social activities and are known on campus.

During summers, you could get an internship at a Sportsbook, ESPN (if you have a connection) and others. Join a league. In general, participate as much as you’re able.

Without knowing much about you, if you’re at the D1, 2 or 3 level, you could be recruited. Then, you have to have videos of yourself playing your top sport.

In general, most boys want to play sports. Identify what makes you different.

Neil’s Answer

If you're considering a career in sports, dive in by watching, listening, and volunteering as much as you can. As a college freshman, be open to any volunteer opportunities in the sports field at your school. Look for chances outside of school too, like with minor league or semi-pro teams, other colleges, or even professional teams. Unless you have a specific area in mind, explore everything from journalism to management, PR, logistics, and sports analytics. Watching movies like Moneyball can show you how complex the world of sports really is. Be honest, learn from experienced people, ask lots of questions, and show your value by being punctual and prepared. There are many books, podcasts, and documentaries about the sports industry, but hands-on experience is key. You'll learn the most about yourself and your goals by jumping in, making mistakes, and making smart choices. Best of luck!

Yao Lawrence O.’s Answer

If you are pursuing this type of field, I suggest that you look at internships even volunteering while you’re in school with a company that specializes in this. Don’t be hesitant to reach out to these companies and research them even sending out a cover letter in your résumé to them.
