How can you reach out to people who have the job that I want outside of my reach?

I have a bunch of family members who work/ have worked in the medical industry, although I have yet to meet someone who has done sonography.

Hi Breana,

LinkedIn is honestly a great platform for this. You can search “sonography” and find people near you with titles like Diagnostic Medical Sonographer or Ultrasound Technologist.

A lot of people are open to answering questions if you keep it short and genuine (you can send a message to them directly). It’s also a really good way to start networking and making connections in the field early on (request virtual coffee chats, etc.).

I hope this helps you find more information about your career of choice!

Breanna’s Answer

Hi Breana! If you’re interested in a career in sonography, one of the best things you can do is start building connections early. You can connect with professionals on LinkedIn by searching 'sonography', reaching out to them for a conversation. Keep the outreach short and respectful, and make it clear that you are trying to learn about the field. Another option is to look for local networking events in healthcare. Also, leverage the experience of your family members and ask them if they can introduce you to colleagues in sonography. Reaching out in these ways can help you build relationships and gain advice from people who are already working in the profession.

Hi Breana. Since you are interested in sonography, there are several ways to find professionals in that field.

You may ask your family members who work in healthcare if they know any sonographers or people who work in imaging departments. Even if they do not know one directly, they may be able to introduce you to someone.

You can also use professional networking platforms such as LinkedIn. Search for sonographers, ultrasound technicians, or medical imaging professionals and send polite messages asking if they would be willing to share their experiences.

Besides, you can contact local hospitals, clinics, or imaging centers and ask whether they offer job shadowing, career talks, or volunteer opportunities. Seeing the work firsthand can help you understand the profession better.

Teklemuz’s Answer

Start connecting with people in sonography by tapping into your current medical contacts and asking them to introduce you to ultrasound or radiology professionals. You can also network on platforms like Handshake, Indeed, Doximity, Ten Thousand Coffees, Reddit, Facebook groups, and through professional sonography or radiology associations and events. To boost your chances, interact with professionals' posts before reaching out, use alumni networks when you can, keep track of your follow-ups, and aim to create meaningful conversations that can eventually lead to referrals and opportunities.

Shelley’s Answer

Hi Breana,

My advice is to talk to your primary physician or specialist you may have appointments with. Mention you are interested in shadowing or interviewing a sonographer. I bet you will get an introduction. Also consider going to a local imaging center and talk to the front desk about interviewing, shadowing or touring the ultrasound department and Technologists. It is not uncommon for groups such as girl/boy scouts to tour an imaging department or imaging center.

Consider contacting your state's local Radiological society, usually done by email. As an example, I live in Indiana so my state chapter is the Indiana Radiologic society (The ISRT) These societies are interested in recruiting students. Contact them, see if you can go to a convention on a student pass. They will pair you with someone and you will meet a plethora of sonographers and other staff in that field. Professionals love to talk about what they do, so go and ask them what you want to know. See if there are office job openings that you could work and get comfortable with the environment in medical imaging.

Be brave, professional and rehearse your questions so you can make a good first impression. They might be someone you work with one day.
Good Luck!
