What mahor/minor is best for me if I want to work my way up to being a creative director?
Im 17 and I really enjoy design, business and film, and I'm not sure what major or minor would best fit me since I want a job that combines all 3? It might be much but I was originally thinking Major in Graphic Design and Minor in Marketing.

Hi Briana,
How are you? Congratulations on your quest to being a creative director. Working with Creative Directors, they're all artist. They love art. Whether is photography, lighting, painting, they embody the ability to display the best story for the production.
I suggest major in Film and Television Production, Digital Media, or Cinema Studies with a minor: Advertising or Public Relations Your major gives you the vocabulary of framing, editing, storytelling, and visual rhythm. Your minor teaches you why an audience connects with a message and how to pitch ideas to stakeholders.
If you looking to go with a brand and or agency for Advertising & Design Houses, your major: Graphic Design, Fine Arts, or Communication Design with a minor Marketing or Business Administration.
I hope this help!! If you haven't start now, start creating with a mobile phone or any camera you can find. Contact your local brands and businesses to intern or volunteer. And create anything you desire. Keep climbing and seek out creative directors, ask them why they made various questions on the art.

No matter which direction you choose, focus on building strong storytelling skills. While graphic design is changing with the rise of Generative AI, don't hesitate to follow your passion. Just be aware of the new tools available and how they can enhance your work. Remember, creative ideas and content are key, along with understanding the context.
If graphic design excites you, go for it and explore advertising and marketing as your support system. Your goal is to capture an audience's emotions with the creative work you and your team produce.
Best of luck on your journey!

Based on your interests, I actually think your idea of majoring in Graphic Design and minoring in Marketing makes a lot of sense. Creative directors often need a strong creative foundation, but they also need to understand branding, audiences, and business strategy.
I would focus less on finding the "perfect" major and more on building skills across all three areas you enjoy: design, business, and film. You can do that through classes, internships, clubs, freelance projects, or personal creative work.
Creative directors typically combine creativity with leadership and business thinking. A strong portfolio and real-world experience can be just as important as your major. As you explore college options, look for opportunities to take courses in design, marketing, film, communications, and business so you can develop a well-rounded skill set and discover which aspects you enjoy most.

I had a similar experience! Going to a liberal arts college gave me the chance to try out different art forms before deciding on my major or minor. In my first year, I wasn't sure what major to pick, but I knew I loved the arts. I looked through the course catalog, found classes that interested me, and picked a major with the most of those courses. As I took classes, I figured out which ones I really liked and adjusted my courses and major along the way. I started with a Digital Media major focusing on Videography, but then I discovered I liked UI UX courses more, so I switched to that. This plan works as long as you keep track of your credits and make sure you have the courses needed to graduate. For example, I wouldn’t suggest changing majors in your senior year if you're missing a lot of required courses, unless you're okay with staying another semester!

Graphic Design major with a Marketing or Film minor is honestly a strong path for becoming a creative director, because the role blends visual creativity, storytelling, branding, and business strategy and building a great portfolio will matter just as much as the degree itself.

Hi Briana, I studied Advertising Art and Graphic Design with a minor in Communications, which gave me a great mix of visual design and writing skills. My career journey has taken me from designer to producer to marketer, and that foundation has been helpful every step of the way.
I agree with Steve about the importance of strong storytelling skills. Whether you're using typography, words, or videos, storytelling is key. Being able to engage an audience is a skill that applies to almost anything. I've seen this in my own career as I moved from digital design to film and TV, then into advertising, and now marketing. Storytelling was always at the heart of it.
Your choice to major in Graphic Design with a minor in Marketing is a smart one. Focus on becoming a well-rounded storyteller, and you'll have a solid foundation to create your own path. The specific job title or industry you end up in will matter less when you have those skills.
