What's the most basic setup & schedule for a YouTube creator starting at 0 subs?

Please give me a day in a life schedule, like a timetable. I work well in a given schedule, but the chaos of being able to do anything at anytime, just overwhelms me. If you could relate, what's your advice?

Hello Niranjan!

As someone who has been a YouTube creator for about 7 years, my biggest advice is to remember that you have to start somewhere. Your first video does not need to be perfect. It just needs to be made. A lot of new creators get overwhelmed because they compare themselves to big channels, but those creators also started at 0. Focus on building your own style instead of trying to match someone else’s.

Start with the time you realistically have. If that means 1 video a month, that is completely fine. Consistency matters much more than trying to force a pace you cannot maintain. Larger creators often have editors, writers, or teams helping them, so it is important not to judge your beginning by their middle.

For a basic setup, you really do not need much: a phone or computer camera, a basic microphone or headset, a phone or computer for editing, and free editing software and free tools for thumbnails. That is enough to begin. When I first started earning from YouTube, I slowly reinvested that money into better gear and editing tools over time.

If having structure helps you, I would suggest creating a simple routine for yourself: time to brainstorm, time to film, time to edit, and time to upload. It does not have to be complicated. The most important thing is to make it realistic enough that you can stick with it.

Also, try not to focus too much on going viral. Slow, steady growth is usually more realistic and more sustainable. There are millions of videos online, so posting consistent, quality content gives you a much better chance of growing than putting all your hope into one video.

Hello Niranjan,

Keep it simple and stay consistent. A basic schedule could be like spend 1 hour learning and researching, 2–3 hours creating your video, 1 hour editing, and 30 minutes uploading, writing the title/thumbnail, and replying to comments. Aim for 1–2 quality videos each week instead of trying to post every day.

At the beginning, focus on improving one video at a time rather than your subscriber count. Consistency and continuous learning are what help channels grow over time.
Thank you comment icon "1–2 quality videos each week..." Any advice to make unique videos that stand out from the feed? it feels like I'm competing with highly credible creators with bigger budget/better production/high expertise. Thanks for the schedule you gave. Niranjan

Hi Niranjan,

Before all the technical stuff, I think the most important step is deciding on the content you want to create. Do some soul searching what topics you are passionate about. Then do a little bit of research what kind of topics people are most interested in. Keep in mind, that you maybe want to keep this going for years. What's a theme that you will be able to talk about every week for a long time? You also want to learn how YouTube works, how the algorithm works, how the analytics work etc. so you can optimize your channel.

Once you know what kind of content you want to create, decide on a schedule and stick to a certain day and time. On the technical side, you can start with a very simple setup. A good phone with camera and microphone is all you need. Make sure you have proper lighting. A ring camera should be fine. You'll also need to learn how to cut video. There are free software packages like Shotcut or similar that do the things you want to do. As you move along and gain followers, you can upgrade to a better microphone, a better camera etc.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!
