Hi Harrison! If you’re in Virginia, you usually don’t need a four year college degree to get into HVAC. A common path is to finish high school or earn a GED, then get hands on training through a trade school, community college program, or apprenticeship. From there, you can start working under experienced HVAC technicians while building the training and work experience needed for Virginia licensing. Virginia regulates HVAC tradespeople through the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation, and there are residential HVAC, journeyman, and eventually master level licenses as you gain experience. Another important certification that I was able to find is EPA Section 608. If your work involves handling refrigerants in air conditioners or refrigeration systems, federal law generally requires this certification. Apprentices can work under the close supervision of a certified technician while they're still learning. Beyond the certifications, employers are going to want someone who's dependable, comfortable working with their hands, willing to learn, and good at troubleshooting. If you're still in high school, I'd look into local HVAC or skilled trades programs and apprenticeships because getting hands on experience early is one of the best ways to see if you enjoy the field and build your work experience as well.
