What major is perfect to become an energy engineer?

I am about to enter to college, and would need to know which major is great for to become an energy engineer, or someone that is within the renewable energy sector. Some people say mechanical engineering, and others say environmental engineering, or electrical engineering, and I would need to know which is best?

Ray’s Answer

If you are specifically looking to go into the renewable energy sector, then I would do some research into what universities are doing research in the areas you are interested in, and what department(s) are involved in the research. That being said there are aspects of renewable energy that can fall under multiple disciplines depending on exactly what you want to do including mechanical, electrical, environmental and even chemical depending on exactly what aspect you want to pursue. It is also possible that you might want to consider a dual degree in two f the above.

Rafael:

If you are attracted to large energy plants (coal or gas power plants, gas turbines, hydroelectric generators), then mechanical engineering q could the be the Field to study. If you are interested in electrical transmission (large powerlines and switch stations-Bonneville Power Authority; wind energy), then electrical engineering would be a good fit. Nuclear energy (may) be making a comeback. If this appeals to you, then try nuclear engineering.

Good Luck, Pete Sturtevant
