Traditionally, Detroit was the center of the car universe in America. But today, there are car factories and design studios all over the USA. For design, there is a lot in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. Factories are all over, CA, NV, the South, Great Lakes, and many other spots.

If you are early in your career, expect to move somewhere to get a job (and most important, experience). Don't worry about money. Learn CAD, physics, math and eventually Engineering.
You can also get into Design if you are very skilled in CAD and drawing, and go to a school like Art Center in Pasadena CA. Follow your heart. Not money.

Most states up north like Ohio offer great salaries for positions in automotive engineering. One should denote that this is because of this is due to the cost of living in such cities. I would try to understand the demographics and costs of moving out in such areas for these jobs.
