What are the best colleges for dance programs that actually lead to professional dance careers?

Many colleges and universities offer dance programs, but not all are consistent at leading to a dance career that pays the bills. Is there a list somewhere of good programs and their rate of graduates getting hired?

The first thing I suggest is looking up some of your favorite dancers/dance companies and see where they attended/where their dancers attended. you'll often see a pattern with companies hiring dancers that went to the same programs. That having been said, some of the best Dance programs in the country are at North Carolina School of the Arts, Butler University, (Indianapolis, IN), and University of Utah (for Ballet). Sara Lawrence College has a great program if you're interested in choreography, and they're 30 minutes from NYC, giving you ample opportunity to come take class in the City and audition, as well. Knowing what specific genre you're interested in would be helpful in giving you more guidance for this. Start by looking at companies you want to dance with or dancers whose technique you aspire to. Find out where they studied. I think that's a great stepping off point. Merde!
