Hi Cindy!

That is wonderful that you want to volunteer in your community! My biggest piece of advice would be to volunteer in something that interests you and you know that you will enjoy. I have found volunteer opportunities on VolunteerMatch.org. It is a great site where you can make a profile with your interests and it will give you different opportunities in your community.

There are so many opportunities to volunteer at your college as well. I would suggest asking your teachers or counselors of volunteering and they might be able to help you find something that relates to your field of study.

Volunteering is a great way to gain experience in rewarding work, good luck!

Best Wishes,

Hi Cindy,

Volunteering and giving back to the community is a vey rewarding experience. I admire your desire to volunteer & give back.
There are several opportunities in the West Palm Beach area. You can check out this website to see what interests you.
During these unprecedented times, I am sure there is a greater need for food banks but I would recommend reviewing your options to see what is the best fit for your interest.

Good luck and all the best!

Choose a charity and reach out to them to see about opportunities.
You can also check in with your school and/or church for ideas.

Ricardo’s Answer

Hey Cindy,

Volunteering is a great experience and it is wonderful that you want to help out your community. Personally, one of the best source of volunteering events is joining a student club. I joined a marine science club and we did a ton of volunteering (at zoos, research labs, and local science festivals, etc...). Joining also connects you to peers and help foster great friendships.

I would also email the organization you are interested in helping out. This shows that you have great interest and are determined to help.

Academic advisors also are a great resource and could potentially give a recommendation on your behave about volunteering there.

I hope this helps,

Ricardo

Hi Cindy,

Yes, as other people have mentioned look into volunteer opportunities that tie to your interests and future career goals. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of organizations are offering virtual volunteer opportunities.

Here are some links that can help you find the perfect volunteer opportunity:
1. https://www.pointsoflight.org/virtual-volunteering-opportunities/
2.https://createthegood.aarp.org/
3.https://www.volunteermatch.org/

Also, if you are interested in interning for a specific organization/company, make sure you reach out to them directly. A lot of organizations would rather have interns who are genuinely interested in their mission and the work they do.

I hope this helps :)

I would encourage you to consider volunteering in a capacity that also helps you network and meet people, even if they're nothing like you! If you like animals, you might consider the volunteering as a puppy raiser for the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind. It's one of the most rewarding things I've ever done.

I would also encourage you to consider volunteering in away that allows you to teach someone about something that is in your field of study. Sometimes teaching is the best way to learn, so focus on topics you want to refine for yourself.

Michelle recommends the following next steps:

Visit https://www.guidedog.org/ and explore if there are opportunities in your area.
Find out if there are opportunities at your college to tutor other students regarding a topic you're good at
Thank you comment icon Thank you so much! I've actually worked with the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind previously volunteering at their events. I do love dogs and didn't know that there way the opportunity to volunteer as a puppy raiser! I will definitely look into this as I think I would enjoy it, and I know it would help out a community that I have personally interacted with. I also just signed up to tutor at my university in the fall. Thanks! Cindy

Roxanne’s Answer

Hello,
Connect with the career developement center or counselor at you school on volunteer opportunities in your field of study. Additionally, there are community wide volunteer events and projects that can be found within the community where you live. Go to your community website to explore/sign up to stay informed about opportunities to volunteer, how to become a volunteer, and the work volunteers are doing in the community.

If you are pursuing an internship, find out if there are volunteer opportunities where you can get engaged as part of the internship. Most employers have incentive volunteer programs that allows you to be an intern in your field of study as well as an opportunity to give back to the community and contribute to their corporate volunteering goals.

Keep up the great work!

Simeon’s Answer

I would reach out to your teachers and see if they know of any internships or work opportunities. Check the websites of companies that you'd like to work for someday and send inquiry emails. Even if a company doesn't know of an internship, they might know of other companies that do offer internships. If you can't find a summer internship, you could also try working at a summer camp. You'll make a lot of new friends and you can often leverage new connections to find job/internship opportunities.
