My question is how do I find tech companies who are hiring non-residents?

My major is computer science and I’m an international student. After graduation we can apply to work for a year as a part of practical training. But I’m worried about my career after that because my one work permit will expire and can’t be renewed since I’m a non-resident of US. I have to find a company who can sponsor H1 visa so that I could continue my work. There are millions of international students, permanent residents/citizens of US, people with greater work experiences applying at the same time as me. My question is how do I find tech companies who are hiring non-residents? How do I stand out among those huge mass people?

International students are facing a few challenges due to the recent policies of the current government administrations. Recently, I've worked with providing job opportunities for international graduate students, and it was very difficult considering that we are also enduring the COVID19 pandemic. You should definitely go to your career services dept to ask about opportunities!

Here is some advice on how to stand out among all other applicants in similar circumstances:

Internships and Assisting Projects at school

-INTERNSHIP: My suggestion to gain an advantage over the competition is to search for internships in tech companies before you graduate (you can do them when classes are not in session ex: Summer, or do a part-time internship while taking courses). You should check with your immigration department just to make sure that it's approved and follow their advice. Generally if it's a non-paid internship it's ok, and you can also get a paid one but your salary and number of hours must be within certain limits).
Also, look into virtual internships as well - tech companies are all going online and allowing virtual work.

-ASSISTING PROJECTS: Ask your professors if you can assist them on projects that they are currently working on. This experience can be helpful because 1) you can put this on your resume later on, and 2) it can lead to a recommendation letter from your professor, or future networking opportunities.

Don't wait until after you graduate to start looking for experience!

Dear Babita,

Computer sciences are a big need in my area (med tech companies) with the need for new ways to collect/manage/interpret million of tons of data. You may give it a try by applying in an international med tech company who should have the capacity to work around the work permit situation. These companies have websites where you can apply online.

George’s Answer

I was also an international student and the path was hard. I suggest prioritizing getting an internship with a medium (publicly traded) to large software company. Don't limit yourself to shinning and popular FAANG companies. There are a lot of good enterprise companies to work for. Stay a way from start ups unless you're getting unique and valuable experience.

Best of Luck

International students are facing few challenges due to less number of sponsorships opportunities available But keep in mind technology is a vast area. Being a computer science engineer you will definitely find a good opportunity. I would suggest as a fresher be open for all the location which will increase the number of opportunities for you. Go to the technology companies websites check for the job openings. If you find job description which matches with your profile then reach out or connect to people who work in to the similar profiles through linked in. There are many people understand the job hunt pain and might help you. You can also ask your queries with them and they might guide you well about the opportunities in their organization.
