Best study strategies in Nursing School?

I do not have the best study strategies currently, but they have gotten me this far. I will be attending nursing school this fall for the ADN program. I will pursue a BSN, and eventually would like to pursue a degree in Nurse Midwifery. What are some of the best study strategies that worked for you? How did your study strategies differ before you were in nursing school. Did you have to dedicate more time and did your social life suffer? #medicine #nursing #healthcare #registered-nurses #pediatric-nursing #nursing-education #nurses

I think you have to figure out first what kind of learner you are. For example I am a kinesthetic learner, so I like to doodle drawings when I am listening to a lecture, I like to be hands-on when I am watching a demonstration, as this helps me retain better. I also take a lot of notes, still until this day, I actually like to take notes either on paper or on the computer so that I can retain what is being said.
I think once you know what kind of learner you are, then you can adapt you learning strategies that will make best use of your time. Also, when I was in nursing school and found a particular subject harder than others, I developed a study group so that I could bounce ideas or ask for help when needed. I found that if I isolate myself, it did not work in my favor. I think my study habits became more serious when I was in nursing school than before because it was something that meant a lot to me and I did not want to fail at it. My best advice is do not be afraid to ask for help!
I will be honest, nursing school is hard. So I feel that the more study groups and ways you can figure out how to retain the information that works for you, the better off you will be. You will never end up retaining everything, but you will learn as you go, and after 25 years, there are things I still remember from nursing school because they are things that were just common sense and still are today.
My social life never suffered because the study groups I made were with my friends from nursing school. Trust me, the friends you make in nursing school become very close friends by the end of your second year! We studied everywhere and hung out a lot. I think also when you get into nursing school, your priorities will change about your social life, not that a social life is not important, but when you have a career you love in front of you, school may become more important for the time being...

I think the key to good study habits is determining what works best for you and being consistent with it. Do you study better in a group or by yourself? Do you retain information better when you study at night or during the day? Do you like to listen to music when you're studying. or do you prefer silence? Once you determine what works best for you then be consistent with it and do it daily. Review notes from your classes on the same day as the class. I think this better helps you retain information particularly important points discussed in class. And work hard and don't give up. Hope this helps. All the best
