What are some internships a high school student can do who are aspiring to be a physician?

I am interested in learning more about this occupation and want to know what internships or things I could do now to get a feel for this job. #medicine #internships #student #physician #high-school

Thank you comment icon Contact your local hospital's volunteer program to see if they have a program for junior volunteers, often called candystrippers. You may have to be 15bor 16, though. in the meantime, look online for professional association's websites, and search for information for students. One example is https://www.asha.org/public/who-are-speech-language-pathologists/ Katie Schwartz, CCC-SLP

There is an organization called MIM (Mentoring in Medicine) whose goal is to increase the number of minorities in the medical field . They have networking sessions on a regular basis in which industry professionals mingle with students and provide contacts/internships for individuals interested in becoming doctors, nurses, phlebotomists, health computer technicians , etc.
Google Dr. Linnette Holden who is the program’s founder and follow the links to apply to her program!

Hi Alexis:

Here are a few internships you can do that might help you decide what career field as a physician you might to enter:

  1. Nursing Home - Nursing homes often need strong high school students to assist in transporting or moving patients. Alexis can read to the elderly people, lead them in songs or simply walk beside them if they need help getting to the cafeteria or lounge area. You also can answer phones, run errands for the nurses or take supplies from one building to another. This will provide valuable insight into caring for geriatric patients if that's a field of interest.

  2. Veterinary Aide - Serving as a veterinary aide is useful for students who love animals and medicine and want to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. Alexis you can comfort pets, hold them during examinations, take dogs for walks or entertain other animals being boarded at the site.

  3. Hospital Aide - Alexis as an aide in a hospital you will meet physicians, lab personnel, nurses and administrative people who can give you recommendations for college or graduate school.

Hope this helps!
