1. Public Health Policy advocate in many government agencies both at federal level and state level influencing and help drafting policies.
2. Legal career in public health - after your undergrad you can pursue legal career to have even major impact public health policy.
3. Doctor, nurse, Physician's assistant, Health Insurance companies , and other medical administrative careers are all possibilities.
4. Health Policy makers are various health facilities and insurance companies need the expertise as well.
5. Teaching Health Policy is an option as well.

Best wishes.

Anthony’s Answer

That's a great question.

Previously I did not think public health was a very feasible major. I always viewed public health as something added to a more specific degree. Not something in and if itself. I do not think I am alone in this.

However, with the pandemic I think a lot more people have realized what public health workers do and how it is extremely beneficial to our society at nearly all topics at whole. I'm essence, public health workers specialize at making populations of people healthy. Its treating many patients at once, not one at a time. I think this question's answer changed a lot in the past two years and I do think it's a feasible field.

It's a great question, Zeinab. I think public health will always be a very important part of health care and planning for the health of our communities. Although it may be possible to get a job in public health with a bachelor's degree, most of the time public health professionals have either a master's degree in public health (an MPH) or a doctorate. For example, here in Michigan we have Dr. Joneigh Khaldun as our chief public health officer who has both an MPH and an M.D.

People with public health degrees can specialize in many areas including epidemiology (which we are hearing a lot about during the pandemic), as well as health education (teaching others about how to be healthy), designing programs and policies around health for governments and agencies....it goes on and on.

If you are interested in how to improve health for your community and would like to approach it from the perspective of someone who works with communities or groups rather than as a one-on-one health care provider, this is definitely an area you should explore further.

Suzanne recommends the following next steps:
