Sheetal’s Answer

Hi Kendra, Great question! I volunteered at a hospital when I was in high school. This was helpful to get a general idea of the medical field. In college, I got a mentor who was a physician and shadowed him. Exposing yourself to the medical field as much as possible will be helpful, not only in building your experience and applications, but also to make sure that this is the path you want to take for your career. Ask lots of questions - find out what people in the field enjoy, what they find most challenging, what they're lifestyle is like and match these responses with what you want for your life.

Sheetal recommends the following next steps:

Volunteer at a hospital or medical office

Caroline’s Answer

Hi Kendra,

I’m not a pediatrician but I do work in pediatric. Pediatric is a great field! There are some free websites with easy to understand development for birth to 12 and free resource/red flags for development: pathways.org. Diaper companies like pampers, and Huggies.com have free courses on infants and toddlers.

I volunteered a lot before going to graduate school and it was a great way to grow my interest outside of healthcare while still helping vulnerable population.

Get involved with different organizations that help kids. Children’s hospital and acute care/long term care facilities will host walks and charity events you can volunteer at and use as a networking event.
