Hi Noah! I'm a big color-coded calendar type person. Schedule periodic check-in's with yourself to see how you're doing and your project(s), too.

In particular for my line of work, we have weekly status calls with a status tracker to see what's changed week-over-week to appreciate growth as well as pain points / room for improvement.

Best of luck!

Elyse’s Answer

Hi Noah,

I would like to reinforce Rebecca's suggestion on creating milestone goals for yourself to stay on track! Rather than only having big goals, it is also helpful to have stepping-stone goals for what you will need to achieve to reach your big goals. For example, owning a business is a big goal, but there are steps along the way such as getting a license, creating a website, finding a physical space, etc. that are important parts of the process. Laying out these goals for yourself with a realistic timeline will allow you to find a sense of accomplishment along the way to keep you motivated.

I also recommend making all goals SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-bound. This will make it easier for you to determine the stepping stones you need to get there.

Finally, I would also recommend reflecting on consistency vs. flexibility. You are absolutely correct that it will take a lot of work + consistency to run a business, and it will also require being able to adapt to change. If you keep your vision on your goals, and allow things to move and shift as is natural, success will feel much more attainable.

Best of luck!

Eddy’s Answer

Hi Noah,

That is a great question because consistency is for sure a key or success. Whenever you have any doubts, it is important to think back to the reason why you got on the journey. Remind yourself of your passion and goals, and this may help you stay motivated throughout your journey. Additionally, it is also important to establish some sort of routine every day. It will help you plan your day wisely, and following a consistent routine will also help you get things done efficiently. I try to establish a routine for myself for precisely that reason.

Additionally, it is important to take care of yourself. Consistency does not mean non-stop work, it requires you to work smartly and sustainably. Taking care of yourself mentally and physically is important to avoid burnout. This will help you go far.

Hope this is helpful, best of luck on your journey! 😄

Hi, Noah,
Asking this early on is a wise move, as some people don't pursue this until there are problems. I suggest you first establish some metrics to follow, such as costs, revenue, customers, inventory, on order, backorder, etc. Those are just examples, as I don't know your business. Seeing these numbers monthly, preferably in a chart, will ensure you see where you are. Knowing you're capturing this data will free you to focus on building the business the rest of the time. The stats become your scorecard. If you're familiar with using spreadsheets, it may be useful to also develop a moving average of 3 to 6 months, so you can envision what the future might be if current performance continues.

Rebecca’s Answer

Thank you for your question. I am glad to hear that you would like to have career aspirations in business.
Firstly, you may need to define long term business in 5-10 years time.
Then, you can break it down into some smaller milestones to achieve in 1-2 years. You bette to put these downs.
Then, you need have plans how to achieve these milestones and review your progress regularly like 1-3 months depending on the milestones.
On the other hand, if you identify any deviation or lag on the progress, you may need to identify ways to rectify it or adjust your milestones.
Keep regular review on the milestones and goals. Adjust in case necessary.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Hi Noah,

Great question, I'm glad to add my point of view to the already amazing responses you've received. I would highly suggest you rely on tools to help you with the management of your business. If you write everything down it will make it easier for you not to forget about pending items, deadlines, resources needed, etc. A particular tool I highly recommend is a Gantt Chart, it's a "calendar" like view where you can list all of the tasks along with dates, resources needed, owners/responsible and it will help you to easily track your progress, with a very easy view of what has been completed and what is missing.
You can find Gantt Chart templates for free by just googling them, an excel version is one that I have found pretty useful. Just remember to keep feeding it and updating it as needed.
Hope this helps!

Having annual goals can go a long way. Sit and imagine where you want to be 1 year from now. Take the major things you want to accomplish and break them into smaller pieces (quarters, months, weeks, etc). From there, I’d recommend finding an adviser or mentor will to meet with you monthly. Inspecting what you expect will help keep you consistent.

I’d also say you should have a vision statement for your business. This will give you something that you can view potential goals against. knowing that the things you are working on will get you to your ultimate desired outcome is also important.
