Hi Celso!

I'm a 4th year college student studying Computer Science. I think it's great that you're already thinking about what you want to do in college! It definitely doesn't hurt to start exploring the different parts and relevant subjects within computer science. This can mean taking any computer science classes your school may offer or exploring online courses outside of your school (there's also a ton of great coding summer programs for highschoolers that you can apply to, and these are great for gaining more experience). There are many different areas of computer science, such as artificial intelligence, robotics, web development, UI/UX design, and many more. You don't have to know exactly what you want to do just yet, but it could be fun to explore the different areas!

From my experience in college, the first year was focused on taking intro classes, such as intro physics, chemistry, and writing seminars. We were not required to affiliate with a specific major until the end of our second year (this depends on the college you go to). You will have time to explore different options in your first and second years. Finding your niche within computer science will come as you get more experience, such as taking more classes and doing internships.

Not many people know what they want to do as early as you do. Take advantage of this and use the time to learn and explore more. This can mean starting a side CS project, looking at potential college programs that you might want to pursue, or reaching out to people in the industry. Best of luck!

Hello!

To obtain a degree in Computer Science, you'll generally need to complete a specific curriculum at your local college. This usually includes a combination of math, engineering, and standard college courses.

For instance, at my alma mater, the core curriculum consists of 15 hours of Math, 9 credits of fundamental engineering, and 59 credits of Computer Science, which primarily focuses on programming. Additionally, you'll find Physics and English courses beneficial for enhancing your technical communication skills. Most Bachelor's degrees require a total of 120 credits.

Embarking on this journey will equip you with valuable knowledge and skills, opening doors to exciting opportunities in the world of technology. So, go ahead and take that first step towards a rewarding career in Computer Science!

Hello!

It's great to hear that you're following a similar career path. I have completed my master's degree in computer science from California State University, Fresno, after finishing my undergrad in the same field in India. Now I am working with Deloitte as a Solution Specialist.

To help you succeed, I suggest exploring technical subjects that interest you. For example, I first fell in love with C++, which led me to dive deeper into the field. You can also try earning certifications through online learning platforms like Udemy or even watch free tutorials on YouTube. Additionally, consider creating a digital portfolio or using GitHub to manage your code, as this can be a valuable asset when searching for jobs in the future.

Hello Celso! Computer Science is a very general term as it could mean lots of different occupations within Tech. I have a computer science/information technology degree, but I work as a UI/UX designer. Others work in help desk and hold certifications suck as A+, MTA, Cloud +, MCSA, MCSE and the list goes on.

I would figure out what part of tech you would like a career in and start there. Hope this helps and best of luck!

Hey Celso -

Thats awesome that you are considering computer Science!

I also was interested in computer science but was confused about the path...

I knew you could code websites.. but also that one could code applications.. that there was coding for cybersecurity.. just vaguely knew that there were different kinds of computer science roles.

when you first start out college.. there will requirements that every student has to take, like your English courses, math courses, science courses and so on.. as you take these you can also take computer science electives which will begin to give you foundational knowledge of computer science.

so there really arent much requirements to start at all! - at first your schedule can look like 4 normal requirement classes ( english, math, biology, humanities ) and one computer science course.

as you climb up your computer science degree - you will start to take classes in the different aspects of computer science and little by little you will be in your way!
