Melody’s Answer

Greetings Mackenzie,

Teachers can have a steady track in their careers as teachers are always in need. Teaching is like any job. It is an experience with its positives and negatives. If you are interested in teaching, know that there is not just one area "a school/university" that uses and has teachers. For elementary teaching, a specific degree is not needed just well-rounded knowledge of core subjects (reading, math) with an ability to research for others. Therefore, a usual general education degree is enough. Middle and high school teaching requires a degree in specific subject areas such as English, Maths, Sciences, History, etc. If you want to teach in middle or high school, then get your degree in the specific subject. You will still have to take the required exams to be licensed as a teacher like elementary teachers.

Best wishes for your future pursuits.

A. Michelle’s Answer

Education is an excellent career pathway because there is high demand, and the job is available everywhere. For elementary school, a general education degree is fine. (If you want to specialize in an area like special education or math, you might need to major in that topic or take tailored courses. At the middle school and especially high school level, it is optimal to major or take significant course work in the subject you would like to teach. Teaching can also be challenging, so make sure you are passionate about it.

A. Michelle recommends the following next steps:

If you are not already doing so, find a way to teach as a volunteer (e.g., after school/summer tutor
Talk to current teachers about their educational journey and classroom experiences.

Adrian’s Answer

This is a fantastic career path, mainly because there will always be a demand for new educators as technology advances and older teachers retire. Your success in this field depends on your expertise in a particular subject and your passion for it. If you're looking for a rewarding challenge, consider teaching English, as it is often regarded as one of the more difficult subjects to teach.
