Vamshee’s Answer

Technology, in and of itself, holds no inherent goodness or badness. What truly counts is how we utilize it and to what degree.
Through technology, our lives are enhanced in countless ways, becoming simpler and more varied.
While the majority view technological progress as a beneficial force, there are those who see it through a negative lens.
However, when harnessed intelligently, technology can bring about nothing but positivity for our society.

I discovered the following article on AI to be highly enlightening:

Tony’s Answer

I found two analogies that help answer this question.

Analogy 1: AI is like a dishwashing machine. Before, you washed dishes by hand. You had a pile of dirty dishes on the left side of the sink, you washed them into the right side of the sink, then you dried them and put them away. After, you prepare the dishes to be washed, scraping the bits of food in the trash and wrinsing enough to put it into the machine. Then 3 hours later, you take the dishes out, inspecting each one, the clean ones get put away, and the ones not quite dirty are then done manually. In AI, we do a lot of "data preparation", as most data is not ready to be immediately processed by AI, then we run the AI models, and then the results have to then be validated, scrutinized, checked for bias, hateful speech or profanity before being accepted. Sometimes you have to modify or edit the output of AI models for particular use. Are dishwashing machines good or bad? Fewer people wash dishes entirely by hand, and people who were dishwashers are now "dishwashing machine operators".

Analogy 2: AI is like training a puppy into a fully-trained dog. You might want a trained "seeing-eye dog" or a "bomb-sniffing dog", or a "junkyard guard dog". In the past, people would by an AI system they were getting a puppy that they then had to train for 3-5 years. But what if you could pre-train a puppy to be any kind of trained dog, and just have the specialized training at the end? Imagine instead buying a 3-year old dog that has been pre-trained, and if you want it to be a "seeing eye dog" or "bomb sniffing dog" just takes a few months of specialized training. The new Large Learning Models (LLMs) are basically pre-trained like this, ready to be specialized by the company that buys it. Is this good or bad? It is estimated that 7 knowledge workers "augmented" by the use of AI will outperform 10 workers without AI. Their employers and the shareholders will gain revenues and spend less on employee labor costs.

Luis’s Answer

AI has already made a significant impact on our world. It's found in many everyday tools, even if it's not always obvious. For instance, AI does helpful tasks like assisting us in composing emails with proper grammar or recognizing our friends' faces in countless photos. However, it can also detect patterns in our social media behavior that make us more likely to purchase specific products. This information is used to influence our opinions and preferences, positioning us as marketing targets if we weren't already. In short, AI can be used to manipulate us. These are just a few examples, as AI is already being utilized for positive and negative purposes.

The rise of Generative AI has brought these purposes to the forefront of public awareness, but opportunities and risks were already there. Humanity has encountered groundbreaking technologies in the past, and after some challenges, we've managed to reduce the adverse effects and enhance the benefits. Solutions often come in the form of regulations, which are laws that dictate the permissible uses of technology.

In the case of AI, this technology is readily available to anyone with the right skills, whether their intentions are good or bad. Nations must collaborate to recognize the advantages and risks and agree on limitations. It may take some time, but we will ultimately succeed.

Certainly a lot that can go into this answer, but I think it has the ability to bring about both positive and negative impacts depending on what we do with it. Instead of giving my a long-winded answer though I'll link you to an interesting article I just read around AI risks: https://news.sky.com/story/ai-risks-are-something-humanity-can-manage-lets-get-working-on-how-it-can-save-us-from-ourselves-12901265
