How can a teen trying to get in a bakery experience get an internship at a small business?

I am very interested in becoming a professional baker and owning a bakery someday. I am only 13, but I would like to start planning from this age so that in 22 years, I can have a stable job at a bakery, and have finished culinary and business school by then to be on my way to my own bakery.

I'd start by reading up on how to bake and watch videos to see how its done, Then try baking at home under the supervision of your parents. You could google baking classes in your area to get more hands on experience as well as start making connections with people that could help you find a job.

In Maryland you have to be 14 to work and https://dhs.maryland.gov/local-offices/baltimore-city/adoption-foster-care-services/bcdss-youth-resources/employment/#:~:text=Employment%20Rules%2C%20Rights%20%26%20Responsibilities&text=Want%20to%20get%20a%20job,download%20an%20application%2C%20click%20here. has info on how to get a minor work permit.

So you have another year or so to research before actually starting a potential job. I'd search google maps for small local bakeries and contact them to see what it would take to get a job or internship. Don't be surprised if you have to start with cleaning or other non-baking jobs and then work your way up.

Find a local bakery and see if they will let you shadow or follow a worker. Study the basics of baking online or in books. See if the local bakery will hire you and teach you. Look for a school in your area. Look for high school Culinary programs and vocational schools that offer baking. Try to learn as much as you can. Get a good mentor and also look for internship programs in your area.

i would try and find a book from a culinary school on baking and pastry and start reading your way through it. then start baking your way through it. start with the basics and build a foundation. if you can get a part time job or internship at a bakery- or even ask one if they'd just let you observe for a day. Its a grueling business and you should have a good idea of what you're getting yourself into before to jump right in.
