Are sports an asset on a resume?

I'm a college student dedicated to academics and building a career, but I love sports. Would joining a club sport be worth my time, or should I get involved in a pre-professional group instead? I'm not sure that I would have time for both. #sports #resume

Sharool’s Answer

You may include high school activities on your resume until the end of your freshman year or beginning of your sophomore year of college. ... However, limit the high school activities to the ones that are the most impressive and best showcase your qualifications for the job/internship you are applying for.

Jordan’s Answer

Absolutely! I work in sales, and seeing that my employees or candidates have a sports background is a great value add; it shows me that they are team oriented and goal driven. It also shows me that they are able to commit to something, and show up consistently to practice. Huge value add!

It can be included as an extra curricular activity to show you are a well rounded person, especially if you have achieved awards etc. at this particular sport.

Kim’s Answer

From what I have been seeing, when it comes to extracurricular activities, you want to focus on leadership and community service. Simply being on a team, while it does show teamwork and dedication to practice, etc, it doesn't go far enough unless it also allows you to show how you meet these other two sought-after attributes. However, the same holds true with the semi-professional organizations. You need to do more than "just" belong!

Best of luck!

Kim

Katy’s Answer

It really depends on what you want to do. Sports and any group activity shows the ability to work on a team and the desire to be physically active. All good things when building your career. Work-life-balance is key. Any activity is going to look good but if you have little experience in your field, you may want to target your extra activities to gain some of that missing experience. The professional experience may help you more when trying to get your foot in the door at an organization.

Shiqi’s Answer

Yes it is an asset. It shows many things, if you are a good athelete - it shows that you can manage to do a lot of things at once - sports and grades. If it is a group sports, it shows that you are a team player and you can work with other people. It also shows your leadership skills, because you lead yourself, and inspire others to perform better. It shows you are mentally tough to recover for failure, and your dedication to do whatever it takes to win.

Bottom line is how you sell your skills you developed as a student athlete, and to show how you can apply your skills to your job. And you never know, maybe the person who's looking at your resume was also an athlete during college!

Chantel’s Answer

If you are looking to work in a field that works with athletes, more than likely will want to know if you have any experience in personally playing the sport or working close to it. Start backward by looking up the job you desire, see the minimum requirements to see what you maybe missing and what you could work on.
